On one side of the river there lived the owner of a factory, Ramen Dutta, with his only son Prabir. Shankar babu used to work in that factory. While working one of his legs was damaged. As a compensation he received a lumpsum amount from the mill and by that money he established an ideal village on the other side of the river. Kalyani and Sutapa helped Shankar in his endeavour. Shankar loved Kalyani but could not marry her due to social reasons. Kalyni was married to Shiben, a factory worker. But Shiben died after their two daughter Sutapa and Binita were born. The misunderstanding between Ramen Ghosh and Shankar started regarding the compensation for Shiben's death. Ramen Dutta disagreed to pay anything to Kalyani.
