Farah Khan Kunder was born on Sunday, 8th October, 1965 and is an Indian film director and choreographer. She is currently married to Shrish Kunder. Her mother Menaka is the sister to Honey and Daisy Irani, former child stars. father Kamran Khan. She has one brother Sajid Khan, who is a comedian and film director. Farah was a bright kid in school and would strive hard to top the class as only then would she be rewarded with a film ticket. Ever since her childhood days, Farah had a flair for dancing and would entertain family and friends by performing on old numbers. This paid off as she soon opened her own dance school while studying in St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
Farah was given her first break by Mansoor Khan in Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) and the rest is history. Farah was a threat to the dance goddess, choreographer Saroj Khan and when Saroj walked out of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the project fell in Farah’s laps and after the success of the movie, Farah was recognized as the number one choreographer in Bollywood.
As a choreographer, Farah has some big projects to her credit like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (2000), Dil Chatha Hai (2001), Monsoon Wedding (2001), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kaal (2005), Krrish (2006) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006). Farah Khan has choreographed for more than hundred songs and has won four Filmfare Awards. Farah always dreamt of directing a movie and was encouraged by friend Shahrukh Khan to pursue it. In 2002, she narrated the script of Main Hoon Na to Shahrukh and he not only agreed to act, but also produced the movie. Main Hoon Na was Farah’s dedication to the 70’s genre having a tinch of the youth pulse, which made the movie a runaway success. The film was a huge success leading to her praise for exceptional directing. During the making of Main Hoon Na, Farah became close to editor Shirish Kunder and the two got married on December 9th 2004 according to Hindu and Muslim tradition.
Farah also choreographed for the Broadway musical Bombay Dreams for which she has won accolades for her work. She has choreographed her husband's directorial debut Jaaneman(2006). In addition Khan has worked on international projects such as Marigold: An Adventure in India(2007). Her last release Om Shanti Om is the highest grosser of 2007. It starred good friend Shahrukh Khan opposite new comer Deepika Padukone and was kind of a spoof on the Hindi film industry.She managed to rope in 32 stars iincluding the contemporaries as well as the yesteryears for a song in this film. She achieved international recognition with her work in Monsoon Wedding, Bombay Dreams and Vanity Fair. She was nominated for Broadway's 2004 Tony Award as Best Choreographer, along with collaborator Anthony van Laast, for Bombay Dreams. Khan has also trained Shakira for a Bollywood version of her hit "Hips Don't Lie" for the MTV Video Music Awards on August 31st 2006, which was hosted live in Radio City Music Hall. Kashif Memon, on the second season of America's Got Talent copied Khan's moves from Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to mesmerize American audiences with what he termed as the Bollywood Dance.
In 2008, Farah Khan delivered triplets.
In 1998 she won the Filmfare Best Choreograhy award for Virasat (1997). In 1999 she won the Filmfare Best Choreograhy award for Dil Se (1998) In 2001 she won the Best Choreograhy award in the International Film academy and also Filmfare Award for Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000). In 2002 she won the Best Choreograhy award in the International Film academy and also Filmfare Award for Dil Chahta Hai (2001). In 2004 she won the Filmfare Best Choreograhy award for Koi Mil Gaya (2003). In 2005 she won the Screen Awards for the best Debut Director for the movie Main Hoon Naa (2004)
She met actor Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and since have become good friends. Farah has worked her way up and till 2001 she was living in a 500 sq. feet flat with her brother and mother, but now she owns a plush sea facing spacious condo in Juhu, Mumbai. Farah’s hard work, determination and attitude have made her a role model for many aspiring choreographers. Shahrukh Khan has gifted Farah Khan with a swanky new Mercedes wheel for her efforts for Om Shanti Om. She is the first woman to be nominated for the Filmfare Awards under the category of Best Director.
