Farhan Akhtar was born on 9th January, 1974 in Mumbai, India. He is an Indian film director by profession. He is the son of very well known scriptwriter, poet and lyricist, Javed Akhtar and screenplay writer and director, Honey Irani. Farhan always had an inclination towards being a writer just like his parents, so at a young age, he dropped out of college to follow his interest. For almost two years he simply did nothing, but just watched movies trying to closely identify the movie script and direction.
He first started off as an assistant to Pankaj Parashar on Himalaya Putra. It was followed by three years in a television software production house Script Shop, as an assistant to Adi Pocha, where his job function ranged from being production manager to assistant director (post production), from scripting commercials and sitcoms to making corporate AV's. These years proved to be the growing years for Farhan. This mixture of creative license and responsibility helped build Farhan's confidence in himself. After leaving Script Shop, Farhan co-directed Shankar Mahadevan's music video Breathles and Pentagram's Price of Bullets with sister Zoya. It was during this period that he started work on a script, tentatively titled Hum Teen. Two years later, the script was called Dil Chahta Hai. He made his directorial debut in Hindi cinema with this film, which starred Aamir Khan. It was a big success, especially popular among the younger generation. Many rate it as one of the greatest movies ever made in Bollywood. Farhan, who had auditioned Preity Zinta earlier while assisting Shekhar Kapoor, always wanted to work with the actress. Preity was the first star to be signed by Farhan for his movie. Farhan had an entirely new and innovative approach to filmmaking. Farhan was one of the first directors to give his movie stars a complete makeover for his Dil Chatha Hai and wife Adhuna Akhtar gave these stars a new hairdo. With Dil Chatha Hai Farhan made his mark as a director. Around the same time, Farhan and wife Adhuna also became the proud parents of daughter Shakya.
Success of Dil Chatha Hai opened new doors for Farhan and he signed Hrithik Roshan for his next Lakshya opposite his favorite actress Preity. Lakshya was one of the first movies that Farhan had scripted, which was based on a laidback and clueless collage kid, who goes to become one of the biggest officers in the Indian army. The script of the movie was authored by his father Javed Akhtar.
During the making of Lakshya, Farhan conceived the idea of remaking Don and his production partner Ritesh supported him to execute the plan. He then directed the remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan film, titled Don - The Chase Begins Again which starred Shahrukh Khan in the title role. The film released on 20 October 2006 and was a huge success at the box office. He produced the film Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. which also did well at the box office. Farhan is also judged the reality dance show titled Nach Baliye on Star One. He also judged the Grasim Mr. India in 2004 and Femina Miss India in 2002.
In 2008, Farhan turns actor with Rock On and also his sister Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance. Both the films are his and friend Ritesh Sidwani's productions.
In 2002 he was nominated by Filmfare in best Director Category for his movie Dil Chahta Hai. He won Filmfare the best Screenplay award for his movie Dil Chahta Hai in 2002. He was nominated again by Filmfare in best Director Category for his movie Lakshya.
Farhan Akhtar married Adhuna Bhabani in 2000 while he was still working at Script Shop. The couple have two children Shakya and Akira. Shabana Azmi is his step mother. His trade marks are his stunning visuals. He loves to write poetries in English and Urdu. He endorses a German watch brand - A Lange. Farhan was also great friends with Aditya and Uday Chopra, but their friendship turned sour after the banner did not give writing credits to his mom Honey Irani for the script of DDLJ. Farhan may only have been in Bollywood for a few years now, but the director has sure become one of the biggest names in the industry Farhan and his childhood friend Ritesh Sidhwani run ‘Excel Films’ that Produced Dil Chatha Hai.
