    Farida Jalal’s real name is Faida Tabrez Barmavar nee Jalal . She was born 18th May and is a bollywood actress by profession. She was married to actor Tabrez Barmavar who died in September 2003 and has a son Yasmeen.

    Farida Jalal started her career in the sixties, when she won the United Film Producers Talent Hunt sponsored by Filmfare. She starred in her first movie as a child artiste in the 1960’s hit 'Chaudvin Ka Chand'. Thereafter she starred in a total of close to 130 movies as a character actress, and her roles included playing the parts of a daughter, sister, a fiancée, & a family friend. She usually played the sister or rejected fiancée of the male lead but almost never the female lead.

    Her most critically acclaimed role is in Bobby where she played the part of the mentally challenged would-be fiancée of Rishi Kapoor. During the eighties, her roles progressed from sister and girlfriend to aunt and mother and even sometimes nanny. Farida Jalal has played the role of sister for actors like Amitabh Bachchan to Vinod Khanna. She even got awarded for that effort of hers. She is also remembered for her part in 'Aradhana' where she played Rajesh Khanna's girlfriend, the ultimate heart throb. Even "Abdulla" did her a whole lot of good. She acted for over forty years, only taking a break during 1983 and 1990, when she settled in Bangalore.

    During the nineties, she had a part in almost every major hit. Her films included Raja Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. She also acted in many Television serials, such as Dekh Bahi Dekh which was a huge sit and popular among masses. She also was grandly acclaimed for her role in the 1994 film Mammo She also starred in a comedy serial - Shararat aired on Star Plus in which she plays a leading role as a Nani.

    In 1972, she won the Filmare best supporting actress award for Paras. In 1992 she won the Filmfare best supporting actress award for Henna. 1994 for Shyam Benegal’s film Mammo, she received the Filmfare Best Performance Award. In 1996 she won the Filmafe best supporting actress award for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

    She is always a bubbly and gregarious character, even when playing the role of a mother or an old woman. In 2005, she co-hosted the 50th Filmfare Awards alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre, In Mumbai. She is one of few actresses that had a role in every major Bollywood hit. She has mothered Preity Zinta in the bold movie Kya Kehna which hit the society by storm. She was never the 'glamour queen' which in the long run has helped in her longevity in Bollywood. She is a sort of institution and main stay of Bollywood and her ability and professionalism has carried her in a career spanning nearly 40 years that shows no sign of letting up.
