As they say sometimes best things comes in small package. We too believe it when it comes to Hindi Cinema, as many times we have witness small films making its mark and at times work even better than some biggies. But then there are few films where they start out with good idea and in between goes on a different track or have bad execution or non star cast, etc. Last but not the least there are some small films which are stuck for long time and when released, people wonder why it ever released. So this week too there is a small film with some talented actors, let’s find out where shall it belong ?

‘Fatso’ is story of Navin {Purab Kohli} and Nandini {Gul Panag} who are madly in love with each other. Navin proposes Nandini and she agrees for a marriage. Their gang of friends comprises of Yash {Neil Bhoopalam}, Tanuja {Gunjan Bakshi} & Sudeep {Ranvir Shorey}. Yash and Tanuja are a couple and Sudeep is a sweet fat guy. One day on their way to a guy’s picnic Navin, Yash and Sudeep meet with an accident. Navin dies and is bought to death office by an Officer {Brijendra Kale}. At the death office they come to know that the officer was supposed to bring Sudeep’s soul and not Navin’s. After long meetings they decide to send Navin’s soul in body of Sudeep, what happens next is what the entire film about.

Story has lots of shades from Rajendra Kumar’s ‘Jhuk Gaya Aasmaan’ and many more Hollywood films. Screenplay and narration in first half {Whose duration is very short} is medium, goes to slow pace post interval and as the climax approaches it goes on the f1 speed. Some scenes like the accident part, Purab watching Gul in restaurant, Purab re-meeting Gul as Ranvir, Gunjan’s suicide scene and few more are good. The best part of the film is the whole Death office system, shown in pretty funny style. But then the whole feelings part of Gul Panang is so confusing that you will feel ‘Inception’ is a film for kindergarten kids. Her feelings keep changing for yash and later surprises us with her sudden feelings for sudeep. The worst part is anti climax and the climax party where the movie goes so fast and everything just happens and ‘bang’ comes ‘The End’. Camera work is pretty average and looks like the editor was at ease throughout the film and suddenly must have got some other assignment , thus finished the film in such a hurried manner.

Music is pretty average. Songs like Jeeya Jaye, Sorry, Fatso does not even register in your head.

Rajat Kapoor’s last directed film ‘Mithya’ was a mind blowing thriller and thus one did expect him to show his director’s touch out here too. Sadly all he showed us was a confused film with some part as slow as passenger train and others as fast as bullet train. He could have made a beautiful romantic film with such a nice subject, with good dosage of humor and emotions. The promos and posters are promoting the film as a comedy of a fat man, but many of scenes shown in promos are not at all same as shown. For e.g. there is a scene where Gul Hugs Neil and in promo they show Ranvir farting, but out here its completely different as Ranvir get upset and no he does not fart. Never thought that such a good director/actor will take its audience for a ride.

Ranvir Shorey is a good actor, but sadly his last few films have been total waste of talent. We appreciate his efforts out here to become a fat man and be in character, but wish he also hears the script in future. Purab in small role is effective. Gul Panag looked great, but had one of the worst characters. Neil, Gunjan, Bharati Archekar, Etc were fine. Brijendra Kala was nice.

So bol mer ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?
Ek do scenes ke alawa is film mein koi Dum nahin hain. This movie is among those films which took a long time to get its released, and yes after watching people will wonder why the hell it released. The whole Fast – Slow treatment in the film and weak script followed by confused direction screams out – Avoid.
