At the tender age of 10 Ganesh Acharya’s father, a famous dancer passed away which plunged his family into a financial crisis and forced him to give up his studies. Ganesh then started learning the art of dancing from his sister. He trained hard and later assisted famous choreographer Kamal, until he passed away.

Even though Ganesh tasted success at a young age, Ganesh had to struggle a lot in the film industry. He started his own dance group at the young age of 12, became a choreographer at 19 and worked in his first film, Anaam (1992) at 21.

Ganesh has choreographed five big films in the year 2006 namely Rang De Basanti Phir Hera Pheri, Golmaal, Omkara and Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Following this Ganesh decided to make a stand in film direction. His first film Swami (2007), which is also produced and written by him, stars Manoj Bajpai and Juhi Chawla and to a surprise this new film does not have any song and dance. The film is about the journey of a man called Swamy (Bajpai) and his wife Radha (Juhi) with a social message.

In 2008, Ganesh Acharya tried to make a comedy (with his favourite actors Govinda and Manoj Bajpai) Money Hai To Honey Hai, a comedy involving a dead man, a will, lots of money and a way. The film, however, flopped very badly.

In 2002, he was nominated in Screen Weekly Awards for best choreography for Badi Mushkil song from Lajja (2001). In 2005, he was nominated for Technical awards in Zee Cine Awards as the best choreographer for the song Aisa Jadoo Dala Re from Khakhee (2004). In 2007 he won Film fare award for best choreography for the song Beedi from Omkara (2006).

Govinda is his favorite dancer and from the heroines his favorite is Madhuri Dixit. He has choreographed Govinda in almost all his films. He often features in songs, like "Koi Jaye to le aaye" from Ghatak (1994) and "Khullam Khulla" in the movie Road (2002).
