We are living in the times where every single thing requires marketing. Right from the smallest thing to the biggest brands, nothing can be established without proper marketing or publicity. With means like Internet, 3G, etc we have lot of awareness. Yet many small films get released and we don’t even come to know about them. All the Satellite channels are interested in big movies or hit movies, lots of flop films are in queue which leaves no chance for such small budget films even out there to gain its worth due. When they come on home video, the situation is same as it was at the time of release. So, on overall basis most of these films go totally unheeded. Most of the times, the end product are not worth watching, but then there are times where we get to see some good concept or a simple film. This week NFDC brings us a small film ‘Gangoobai’ starring Theater & T.V Veteran actress Sarita Joshi in the lead role. So let us find out whether this film will go in the darkness of unnoticed films or might manage to create some buzz even without any sort of marketing or publicity or most importantly- star power.

‘Gangoobai’ is story of a maid servant Gangoobai {Sarita Joshi} residing in small hill station – Matheran. One day she watches her master’s daughter wearing a Parsi Ghara Saree. She falls in love with it and decides to get one for herself too. She comes to know that it belongs to a designer, Rohan’s {Raj Zutshi} Collection, costing around Rs.45,000. Thus, starts the hardship of earning money by doing loads of odd jobs for more than four years and finally manages to get the amount. What happens next, is what the entire film is about.

Story is total different and has human values indulged in it. It’s a very simple and one liner plot, but the whole concept is brilliant and unusual. Screenplay has several interesting moments such as Sarita Joshi imagining the Ghara Saree work in form of animation, Sarita doing odd jobs, Sarita’s first meet with Meeta Vasisht at the designer store followed by the whole fashion show experience, Sarita’s night out with Purab Kohli & Nidhi Sunil, Sarita experiencing the feel and magic of her Saree and few more including the finale part. These moments are pretty simple and portrayed without any stylish way, but still connects with you on the feel good part.
On the flip side the whole Purab – Nidhi track was pretty weak, the whole flow of the film is bit lethargic, Nidhi – Rushad Rana track, etc should have been better. The anti climax part tends to disturb you, but that’s how the story shapes up. Camera work is fine; all the locations of Matheran, South Mumbai, etc are great. Editing should have been more gripping. Background music is soothing.

Director Priya Krishnaswamy has edited some good films like ‘Bhopal Express’, ‘Bombay Boys’, etc and now debuts as a director with ‘Gangoobai’. She dares to select such unseen and untold tale of an old house maid with her passion and dreams. Kudos to her and her team for making such a film and that too with total simplicity which works in favour of such films. The way she presents Sarita’s passion for Ghara Saree work is amazing. She should have avoided the side tracks which diluted the whole effect of the film.

Sarita Joshi is one of finest talent we have on stage and television. She has worked as a character artist in many films. Out here, she comes on the silver screen in a lead role and portrays her part with total conviction, grace and dedication. You can see the spark in her eyes when she dreams about the sarees, which is total natural and very hard to find in many of today’s leading ladies. Purab kohli is sweet, but wished his track with Nidhi Sunil would have been written in much better way. Meeta Vasisht, Raj Zutshi, Behram Rana, Aparna Kaneka lends great support. Gopi Desai has an impressive cameo. Rushad Rana and Ankita were hamming.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hain Dum ?

Dum hain in terms of concept, performances and an unusual story line. The movie is total simple by heart and will be loved by all those who love simple feel good films. Though not an outstanding or out of this world type film, but still has a spark of something different. Despite of all these the movie might still go unnoticed as lacks highly on publicity and star value. But for all those who want to see simple feel good film made from heart with zero expectations - Watch it before it gets lost in the world of darkness.
