Manoj Bajpai's house in the movie is where Director Anurag Kashyap and his brother, Abhinav Kashyap were born.
The film was premiered at 65th Cannes International Film Festival. It was chosen to be screened at the 'Director's Fortnight', a non-competitive section of the festival. The film had a lengthy 5 hour long screening.
Zeishan Quadri, one of the co-writer, who also plays one of the leads in the film, approached Anurag Kashyap. When Zeishan narrated the stories from Wasseypur, Kashyap was awestruck and decided to make the film.
Anurag used realistic severed heads, severed hands, artificial bellies for mimicking pregnancy and even full artificial bodies from silicon for the film.
In 2010, while shooting at Varanasi, an assistant director - Sohail Shah was killed in an road accident.
Some section of the film media reports that the film is inspired by the murder case involving Jharkhand politician Suryadev Singh, Binod Singh and Sakeldeo Singh, who were convicted of murder.
