The story starts with two characters- Rabi and Jadav. Jadav's father Madhab Thakur was an orthodox type of person, spent his time mostly in worshipping. Rabi's father Mr. Mukherjee spent his time diametrically opposite to that of Madhab. He believed in western civilization. He was a poor man in his early days. He needed to pray at that time, but nothing happened . Then he ultmately become a successful rich man due to his own hard work. Though Mr. Mukherjee and Madhab were different in nature, they were good friends. The irony of this film was that Madhab Thakur's son Jadav believed in Mr. Mukherjee's view and Mr. Mukherjee's son Rabi followed Madhab's view. Madhab Thakur's daughter Malati and Rabi started a small school to teach litttle children. They thought they will spread education throughout India some day. Mr. Mukherjee wanted to help them financially in this venture. But Madhabthakur refused that help. Then started a misunderstanding between two friends. One day Madhab Thakur declared that he had arrenged a marriage of his elder daughter Madhabi and Santosh. Madhab Thakur didnot know that Santosh was a drunkard and was uneducated. Jadav protested against this marriage. He asked Madhabi about her reaction. Madhabi told that her father's decesion was her decision. So the marriage between Santosh and Madhabi occurred. In the first night when Madhabi saw Santosh drunk, she did not say a single word against any body. After a few days, when Rabi saw Santosh mortgaging ornaments of Madhabi, he took away that ornament from him. Santosh informed Madhab Thakur that Rabi had insulted him. Madhab was so angry that he told Rabi not to come to his house and many more things. Rabi and Malati loved each other, but they did not express this love to any body. Mrs. Mukherjee was also aware of this. She accepted Malati as her would be daughter-in-law and presented her a gold necklace. But one day Rabi and Mrs. Mukherjee came to know that Madhab Thakur had arranged marriage of Malati else where with an old zamindar. Mr. Mukherjee came and appealed to Madhab Thakur to stop this marriage. Madhabi also requested the same thing, but Madhab Thakur did not listen to any body. On the day of marriage, the bride groom came as usual. But where was the groom? Where was Malati? Madhab Thakur was about to collapse. But the problem was over at the end of the film.
