Nikhilesh, a king of a remote village in Bengal is beloved by all his people, both Hindus and Muslims. He is married for 10 years with Bimala. She has a sister -in- law who is a widow. This experience taught Nikhilesh to think about woman's liberation. He educated Bimala in English culture, literature and music and at last he brings her in their outer chamber of the palace by breaking old traditions and introduces her with his friend Sandip. Another of Ray’s magnamous epic creations, “Ghare Baire” deals with the Swadeshi movement & a violent love story on the backdrop of the volatile Indian Freedom movement. An absolute classic of its kind, this film won awards & acknowledgements throughout the planet. The film was finished in 1983 & released in 1984. Though critics rate “Charulata” as a better depiction of Tagore’s novella than “Ghare-Baire”, still it can be rated as one of the best examples of technical work & method acting.
