Geeta De was born in Kolkata on August 5th, 1931. Her father was Anadi Mitra and mother Renuka Mitra. Due to family reasons she could not continue her studies after eighth standard.
When she was only 6, her acting career started in Nityaniketan Theatre. She used to take her musical lessons from Radharani Devi who introduced her to commercial theatre. She started her professional stage career in Sree Rangan Theatre and there after she joined Natya Bharati. At the age of 13, she joined the Star Theatre. When she was only 14, her mother died. Another stage actress Bandana Devi loved her like her own daughter. Bandana Devi introduced her with Sishir Bhaduri. She stunned every body by her acting in the drama “Takth-E-Tans” under the guidance of Sishir Bhaduri. In later years she was a staff artist of the Star Theatre. She first acted in “Dampati” in a very small role. The role was of a child artist. When she was only 10, again she appeared in a small role in the film “Ahuti”. Her debut as a female lead in film was in “Daini” in the year 1960 directed by Manoj Bhattacharya. Stage and film actor Kali Banerjee introduced her with Ritwik Ghatak. She acted in Ritwik’s “Meghe Dhaka Tara”. Her major films were “Kabi”, Jiban Je Rakam”, “Phuleshwari”, “Bapika Biday” etc. These days she is busy in television acting. She is married and mother of two sons and a daughter.
