Only the adjetives "superlatives"can be ascribed to "Guide'. Vijay Anand gave the superb direction with impeccable screen-play. Dev Anand has given the best performance in the role "Raju'. No other character in hs long film career is so catchy and touchy as in "Guide". Waheeda is fittest to his role "Rosie". S.D Burman has showered the most precious gems fromhis treasury.
Raju, a tourist guide comes across the husband and wife, Marco and Rosie. Rosie has profound bent for dancing, which her scholar is strongly opposed to. But, Raju tries to unearth the latent potentials in Rosie. Thus they come closer. Raju's encouragement acts upon Rosie who finds an emancipator in Raju. Rosie leaves her husband by "Kanto se khich ke le aanchal and tor ke bandhan bandhi payel". But, Raju's being together with a married lady becomes an eye-sore to many including his friend Gaffur(Anwar Hussain) and Raju's mother. Raju is thus declassed by his friend circle and kiths and kins. Now Raju has single enterprise to bring Rosie into lime-light. He is successful. Rosie becomes an exponent in "Bharat Natam". She gains pelf and position though she has little interest in such material rewards. But as an agent and impressorio Raju banks upon the wealth and luxury of Rosie. He burdens Rosie with more and more schedule and squanders Rosie's wealth. His lust for luxury surpassed his romantic inclination for Rosie. Meanwhile, Marco (Kishor Sahu) sends a book written on his research on the caves of Memphi Hills, But, Raju hides it from Rosie lest she should revive connection with her husband. But when Nalini(stage name) comes to know the factt there comes about a rift in their relationship.Situation turns all the more serious, when Raju forges the signature of Rosie for the release of jwellery held as joint in the bank. Though Rosie forgives him, the evidence is so vivid that Raju is arrested and put behind the bars. After two years of imprisonment, when he comes out he is lonely under the son. A poor peasant Velan takes him as wise and spirited. He brings Raju home where he solves a family problem and the villagers look upon his as their spiritual guide. In the mean time, there is an outbreak of drought in the village. Now, Raju becomes circumstantially compelled to undertake a ritual fast for the sake of the villagers. Raju has become their spiritual guide. People from far and wide start swarming i Foreign media too came there to have coverage of the holy-man. Rosie and Raju's mother came all the way. It is on the eleventh day Raju succmbs. With the on-set of rain the Railway Tourist Guide turns into a spiritual guide.
The film has gross relation with the ancient myths, time-borne conviction and heritage. It touches the sentiments of India.R.K Narayan's novel has been justly screen-played except a few situations. The comming of the rain was not in the novel but such polarisation has added a dimension.
