Guru is the story of Gurukant Desai [Abhishek Bachchan]who dreams of being a rich and famous businessman.His father is a school teacher who doesn't understand Abhishek's dreams and is always discoiraging him.Ater spending years in Turkey working as an oil can supplier alongwith his relative, Guru returns to his village in Gjurat. On the way,he meets Sujata[AishwarRai]in the train who is planning to run away with her boyfriend Bhanu. But he never turns up.She is shamed, and shunned by the village. At this stage, Guru offers to marry her, as her father is paying off a hefty dowry to anyone who rescues their daughter.His plan is to start up a business with the dowry money so the couple move to Mumbai alongwith Sujata's brother Jignesh Guru faces roadblocks when he sees how Mumbai's powerful textile traders- of Parsee origin- don't let new people in, Then,he runs into Manik Dasgupta [Mithun Chakraborty]who owns a news paper.Dasgupta reveals his undemocratic plight in the papers, and therein begins Guru's success story. After fathering two daughters, Guru begins Shakti Mills, the only mill in India to produce Kela Silk. In the process, Guru starts the concept of share trading- with the common man. But now his power hungry levels turn Manik Dasgupta, an honest journalist,against him.His niece, a multiple scelerosis victim,Meenu, played by Vidya Balan is Guru's close friend, but because of this sowering of relationship between the two men, she and Sujata too, can't meet any longer. Her boyfriend, Madhavan, a reporter in Dasgupta's paper, is set to reveal Guru's bribing and arm twisting ways. Finally, with a slew of negative stories against Guru's Shakti Mills, he suffers closure and loss of business. His shareholders lose faith in him, and Guru is shocked into a cardiac arrest. While Sujata nurses him back to health, Guru faces an economic offences enquiry to be held under media glare. Guru's failing health, and Meenu's loss of life kills Manik Dasgupta's fighting spirit. So will Guru be able to salvage his visionary business and escape the law without bribery? The climax is a striking speech by Guru, that stays with the viewer long after the movie is over.
