    “Sangtye Eika” an autobiography that created much sensation in Maharashtra in 1970 is the brainchild of Hansa Wadker. Born on 24 January 1923 in Mumbai, her original name was Ratan Bhalchandra Salgaonker was keen to singing, dancing as a legacy. She learnt English too. Her first Marathi film was “Vijayachi Lagnye” produced by “Lalit Kaladarshan” at the age of 13, penned by literature dramatist Mama Warerker. Her name was changed to “Hansa” for the film but Hansa tag remained forever.
    In 1941, she came to “Prabhat Film” in Pune for a film “Sant Sakhu”. It was a hit. She did “Ramshastri”. After that a very renowned film “Lokshahir Ramjoshi” jointly directed by V. Shantaram a Baburao Painter.
    In 1948 she did only one Hindi movie “Dhanyawad” directed by Gajanan Jagirdar but that picture did not do well at the box office. “Pudcha Pauool” directed by Raja Paranjape (1950), “Mee Tulas Tuja Angani” (1955) directed by Raja Thakur and “Nayakinicha Sajjya (1957) directed by Bhaljee Pendharkar are some of important films to her credit. Her Marathi film “Sangtye Eika” released in 1959 was running for 131 weeks in Vijayanand Talkies in Pune. It was a record at that time. Her film “Dharmakanya” (1968) got her national award.
    She was married at any early age of 15 with her relative Bandarker. However, she had to face lot of hardships in her personal life. Even after her marriage many so-called elite people in the society had sexual relations out of wedlock. All that she narrated in her autobiography “Sangtye Eika”.
    Well known Director Shyam Benegal made film on her life titled ‘Bhumika”. Actress Smita Patil played Hansa’s role in that film.
