Hema Malini was born in Ammankudi, Tamil Nadu, on Octobar 16th 1948. She is the daughter of Shri V.S.R. Chakravarty and Shrimati Jaya Chakravarthy (Iyengar Brahmins), who was a film producer. She did her studies from Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai. Hema, who always dreamt of being an actress, started pursuing her career at the young age of sixteen.

Her first role was a short episode as a dancer in Pandava Vanavasam a 1961 Telugu film. Subsequently she tried to enter films in 1964, but was rejected outrightly. However, with her efforts, and persistance not stopping her, she was launched in Sapno Ka Saudagar(1968), against the ageing superstar Raj Kapoor. Her next big venture came with Dev Anand in the movie Johnny Mera Naam (1970), which turned out to be a Golden Jubilee Hit. After the release of Seeta Aur Geeta(1972), which won her the best actress award, there was no looking back for her, and she was established as the queen of Bollywood.

After her debut film, Sapno ka Saudagar (1968), she got a few moderate films. But after Johnny Mera Naam (1970) and Seeta Aur Geeta(1972), her career graph shot up. She further strengthened her position, with movies like Raja Jani(1972), Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975), Dream Girl (1977) & many more with Dharmendra & also starring opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Hema Malini had a glamour girl image attached to her. She gave a series of hits following Seeta and Geeta. In addition to that, she proved her acting talent with sensitive performance in Laal Patthar(1971), Khushboo(1975), Kinara(1977), Meera(1979) etc. However, in 1980s she turned on to concentrate on her dance performances and strong feminist roles. She gave a fine perfomance in Rihaee(1988). Following a long break from 1990s, Hema co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan in the successful film Baghban(2003), and made a comeback. She went on to play cameo role in Veer Zaara(2004) which proved to be blockbuster. Hema Malini was lately seen in a cameo of a courtesan role in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag(2007).

Hema Malini is the brand endorser for Kent RO (Reverse Osmosis). Recently, Future Group has launched a new product named Dreamline and Hema has been chosen its brand Ambassador.

Hema Malini has a long list of awards to her credit. She won the best actress filmfare award for Seeta Aur Geeta(1973) and got nominated for the same category almost every year in the 70s and for Baghban(2003). She got the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. She was awarded the Padma Shri award in 2000 which is India’s fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India.
