    • Anupam Roy : The 'Rahman' of Bengal

Hemlock Society music rating: 9 out of 10(Somak wrote on Jun 13 2012 1:22PM)

Since the news of Srijit's next after 'Baishe Srabon', Hemlock Society's announcement broke out, everyone started calculating days till trailer launch, music launch and release of the movie. And when finally the trailer was on the floors, it indicated that some extraordinary music is coming from Anupam Roy again. HEMLOCK SOCIETY's music represents variety, elegance and limpidity.

      SONGS -

COMPOSER (Of All Songs) : ANUPAM ROY [except 'Hemlock Society Theme', which is composed by Indradeep Dasgupta]
LYRICIST (Of All Songs) : ANUPAM ROY

Contributing Artist(s) - LOPAMUDRA MITRA [FEMALE] & RUPANKAR BAGCHI [MALE]

The album starts with heartbreak which will mainly feature Meghna, the protagonist of the movie and the problem which fall upon her one after one and that's why she is compelled to think about committing suicide. The lyrics mainly indicate depression with a hint of self-confidence and dependency on the loved one. Lyrics are the main power of the song as they confess a lot in a metaphorical manner. Lopamudra Mitra's debonair voice makes the track more soulful and mystic. Rupankar Bagchi's version even though is shorter but marks its own victory with a dashing and sweet vocal. This track is extremely soulful.

Song No. 2 - EKHON ONEK RAAT
      Contributing Artist - ANUPAM ROY

It's a Anupam Roy composed album and there will be no extraordinary Anupam Roy track, how can that happen? 'Ekhon Onek Raat' is mainly a sweet romantic number which consists lyrics even more sweeter than the song. Anupam Roy's lyrics always have a different feel in them and so do we see here again. Maybe this song indicates either our love towards life or the one we love the most. But this song is extremely beautiful and pontifically carried out by the singer-composer himself.

Song No. 3 - EI TO AMI CHAI
Contributing Artist(s) - SHREYA GHOSHAL & ANUPAM ROY in backing vocal

Don't think Hemlock Society is short of romantic numbers. Here comes another entrancing and delightful romantic number in the sweetest vocal by Shreya Ghoshal. 'Ei To Ami Chai' brings back that feeling of 'Chal Rastay' & 'Je Kota Din' with its mesmerizing vocal & lyrics. Anupam Roy's backing vocal adds magic. The 'mukhra's and the 'antara's of the song are equally blended with elegance and charm. A very beautiful romantic track that will mark its existence for a very long time.

Song No. 4 - JAWL PHORING
      Contributing Artist - SHILAJIT

Now comes something different and classy with never-heard-before Shilajit in an Anupam Roy composed. I can't remember since when I had liked a Shilajit track this much. Music & rhythm is elevated, lyrics are pompous and Shilajit's vocal is spellbinding. The sweetness of the song escalates for the excellent use of mouth-organ, xylophone and acoustic guitar. It's a certain romantic number that all along endures romanticism in it.

Song No. 5 - PHIRIYE DEWAR GAAN
      Contributing Artist - RUPAM ISLAM

How can an Anupam Roy album end without a Rupam Islam track rocking in it? Autograph lived in many hearts for the matureness in the movie and 'Beche Thakar Gaan'. 'Baishe Srabon' was the most authentically made Bengali Suspense thriller ever which also featured 'Ei Srabon', a historic track with the soul of the movie. And now, Hemlock Society will be remembered for Phiriye Dewar Gaan. This song mainly concentrates on heartbreak and if it does resemble any thing else, then you can know it by the movie. That's Srijit style. Rupam Islam's magical and unprecedented vocal makes this track a must-experience rather than a must-listen. On the whole, Phiriye Dewar Gaan is historic, magnificent, meretricious and will be perennial in records.

Contributing Artist - INSTRUMENTAL; Composed by INDRADEEP DASGUPTA

Now comes the soul of the film which sounds very sorrowful and melancholic as the movie resembles death mostly. Flutes, Violin and many other instruments playing in the background make this 3:27 minutes short instrumental very concealed and mysterious. Great work done by Indradeep.

      REVIEW -
Cut short, HEMLOCK SOCIETY is an 'Anupam Roy Musical'. Such beautiful and meaningful music was never expected in a Bengali music but last few Anupam Roy composed movies proved everyone wrong. Candid lyrics with melodious composition - that's always Anupam Roy style and HEMLOCK SOCIETY is nothing different from it. Where there are beauteous tracks like "Ei To Ami Chai", "Jawl Phoring" & "Ekhon Onek Raat", the album is also bestowed by soulful tracks like "Amar Mawte" & "Phiriye Dewar Gaan" and a mystical "Hemlock Society Theme". So, without any doubt ANUPAM ROY is the respected A.R.RAHMAN of Bengal. Like RAHMAN, ANUPAM never fails to give masterly composed perdurable tracks which can never make you feel bore no matter how many times you listen them. There's nothing in HEMLOCK SOCIETY's whole album where one can try to find a flaw. It's magnificently perfect.
