Why Hemlock Society is an important film of our times

Hemlock Society rating: 8 out of 10

Suicide is an integral part of our society. We read about suicide in the papers, watch it on TV news channels, serials and so on. However, unless it's a sensational episode like some young actress or model committing suicide or some politically sensitive suicide case which can generate some gossip or speculation or mindless banter, it's quickly relegated to the back of our memories. Suicide is hardly a part of our conversation at home, in cafes, in the chatter near the office water cooler. We don't pause to think about the individual who took this drastic step to end his ... » read more

Defeating 'Death' by Making a Mockery of It

'Srijit Mukherji delivers his third baby' - This was the reputation of HEMLOCK SOCIETY till date. Which easily indicates that the whole Bengal was expecting hugely from the movie. Srijit Mukherji has earned huge respect till now as "AUTOGRAPH" & "BAISHE SRABON" were path-breaking and imperishable. Srijit is a man of innovation, distinction and perfection and the theme of HEMLOCK SOCIETY looked just like them. Making a society that tells you how to suicide successfully is a brilliant idea to come up with it. But that's not the main story. The society is just a fun thing ... » read more

“Hemlock Society”: Absurd drama with a twist!

Hemlock Society rating: 0 out of 10

Srijit Mukherjee’s new venture "Hemlock Society" is philanthropy in form of a film; Mukherjee revives the archetypal figure of the Do-gooder bearing the suggestive name Ananda Kar, which literally translates into “be happy”. Interestingly, the name “Hemlock Society” contains a pun as in the name Ananda Kar: hemlock is that archetypal venom which seems to have been injected in our veins. We are all residents of a society drinking on hemlock every day. The film lays threadbare in gruesome detail the existential agony of such a world, and then, reclaims it from the same. ... » read more

" To my friends: My work is done. Why wait?"----George Eastman, famous inventor ; " The future is just old age and illness and pain."---James Whale, eminent film director; " Dear world, I am leaving you because I am bored."---George Sandors, famous film actor; "It's better to burn away than to fade away."--Kurl Cobain, eminent musician. " I myself and my wife--in order to escape the disgrace of deposition or capitulation--choose death "---Adolf Hitlar, political tycoon. These are the snippets of suicide notes of a few, the world is apt to remember. Each of them justified ... » read more

The Hemlock Society USA was a national right-to-die organization founded in Santa Monica, California by Derek Humphry in 1980. Its primary missions included providing information to dying persons and supporting legislation permitting physician-assisted suicide. In 2003 the national organization renamed itself, and a year later merged with another group into a newly formed national organization called Compassion & Choices. A number of unaffiliated local organizations continue to operate under the Hemlock Society name.

A recent report by Reuters says that - “Suicide is the second most common cause of death for young people in India, a country with one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Some 56 percent of all women who took their own lives in 2010 and 40 percent of men were aged between 15 and 29.” It also says that - “the main risk factors are mental illness - primarily depression - and alcohol abuse, as well as violence, loss, abuse and pressures from cultural and social backgrounds.” We are living in a society where it’s very hard to live up the expectations and very easy to ... » read more

    Hemlock for a Life…

A terminally ill individual can resort to doing quite a few things. Some could be trivial, some reaching the boundaries of queer absurdity! Ananda Kar is absurd in his way of accomplishing his dream. His physical and non-physical belongings include a queen-size BMW, a therapeutic, supposedly healing institute and his endless enthusiasm towards finding potential patients all across his locale if that requires to get-crash into his to-be subjects’ privacy!
Meghna lands up in his list in this fashion. Her decision to see the last dawn of her life gets oxygen from this ... » read more

A Good Film, I Can Assure

Over the years, Bengali arthouse cinema has made much progress. Today, the average urban youth casts a distasteful glance at a commercial poster and embraces a parallel film. Neglecting the hard work done by almost all actors in a mainstream film, movie goers and movie critics staunchly protect parallel films, turning the most insignificant incidents into philosophical questions, unnecessarily bring great bards like Tagore into comparison, and similarly, try to find every flaw in a mainstream genred film.

Okay, Hemlock Society, the third film of Srijit, has been ... » read more
