My Rating

  • Heroine...old wine in an old bottle!

Heroine rating: 4 out of 10(Pratima Chaudhuri wrote on 22 Sep 2012)

His movie-titles are as un-imaginative as he is and Heroine is just a testimony of how myopic and limited a film-maker can be.

The story of a messed up woman, Mahi Arora who is a ‘heroine’ and thinks that she is an actor, her story revolves around the sycophants that she has surrounded herself with, wrong choice of men, smoking and drinking away to insanity and a profession she has chosen in her own words for ‘fame and money’. A pity that Madhur Bhandarker spoiled a story of which he is a part of! Thinking of that, there is not much of a story, just a few incidents loosely connected. Many reviewers have talked about clichés that have been used; I would say not even that. If he would have researched through the tabloids and film-magazines well, he might have got a better story. All he did was tweaked his ‘Page 3’, ‘Corporate’ and ‘Fashion’ script and the product was ‘Heroine’, and the insincerity showed.

A few good moments – the very first scene and the one that followed in the police station was nicely done, and so was Arjun Rampal’s sequence where she deleted his lady-love’s phone number are a few scenes worth mentioning. Randeep Hooda, Divya Dutta and Ranvir Shorey were good, so was Govind Namdeo as the father-figure secretary, and completely wasted in the film. The one person who rose above this dented script and made the character somewhat believable is Kareena Kapoor, she looked delectable in what she wore, and she carried off the melodrama quite well…but even after the story finished, one is confused on what to feel for her, and the script is to blame; sympathies for her that she had to portray a character in a film that is completely messed up. Apart from this, no other aspect of film industry was explored like music, choreography, cinematography. What appeared was film industry is only about megalomaniac stars, sycophants and gays.

Instead of this script, if he would have made a biopic on any of the yesteryear actresses based on a biography, may be it would have been a better film

Should one see it… yes, only for the lady, for sure she has tried to put an honest effort.
