Watching that contentment reflecting in her smile says it all actually. A few years elder to me, she used to be my neighbour in Kolkata when I was a kid, studying in school. Beautiful she was, hence marriage proposals from established grooms used to flood for her till that day when she fled away with her boyfriend. People said, she could not be happy for that man was from a low status/poor income level. Years passed by. I grew up, got married, visited Kolkata many times. But whenever I chanced to meet her, I fail to notice any spot of unhappiness in her face, despite the ... » read more

'Highway', on my Slate - *Movie Review*

Actually, I am going to rename my reviews as 'Viewer's experience', at least with Highway to begin with.

Clear-cut, straight down the road, the movie starts with melange of highways from different parts of northern India, mostly Himachal, Uttarakhand, Punjab etc.,. so you actually know you've hit the highway, except that you are stationary in a theatre. Yeah, Reality sucks!!

Then, you have this handy cam shots of a slick city girl (Alia) who is to wed an NRI (name not important), but hey, you come to know he is NRI only when in the last scene he puts ... » read more

HIGHWAY A JOURNEY TO A NEW LIFE

Highway rating: 1 out of 10

Imtiaz Ali is one such director who can actually see a woman’s mind. When he writes any script, he actually becomes the characters of the story. HIGHWAY is no exception. After watching HIGHWAY I simply felt I don’t want to see any other movie at least for next 3 months as I want to feel Veera’s pain in my heart, I want to understand Mahabir a little more. I love Imtiaz more than Yash chopra as the former deals with most complicated, secret feelings and emotions of women with beautiful depiction. This film gives out a strong message of child sexual abuse and how vulnerable ... » read more

    Watch it for Alia.

Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt) is a happy go lucky girl from a very rich family and is about to get married in few days. She is fed up of all the rituals and other ceremonies going on in her house. One night she calls her fiancé and goes out for a long drive, while at a Petrol station, she gets kidnapped by few thieves [headed by Mahabir Bhati (Randeep Hooda)] who were in the process of looting that very place.

And the journey called Highway beings.

Alia Bhatt is the backbone of the movie. Frankly, I still have that Student of The Year image of her in my ... » read more

Film: "Highway"; Cast: Randeep Hooda, Alia Bhatt; Director: Imtiaz Ali; Rating:****

Being in the world this enchanting film inhabits is like being in the state of a waking dream. The world is fatally flawed. But it's also beautiful in spite of the deep flaws, or maybe because of them?

Imtiaz Ali's new intriguing work takes us into the heartland of India, much in the same way that "Jab We Met" and to a lesser extent "Rockstar" did. Imtiaz loves his India. With all its gigantic contradictions, anomalies and aberrations.

And Veera, the arresting protagonist of "Highway", is an anomaly herself. A misfit, akin to the one that Parineeti Chopra played so aptly in "Hasee Toh Phasee" recently. Alia's performance nails Veera with a persuasiveness that belies her two-film old history.
