Satyajit Ray’s “Hirak Rajar Deshe” released on 19th December, 1980. Materially, it was a sequel of “Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne”. But from the heart & philosophy, “Hirak Rajar Deshe” was a brilliant portrayal of political symbolism. Nevertheless the voyeur may discover tinges of Italian neo-realism in the climax of the film too. The sets, art direction, camera & Ray’s screenplay all had been outstanding. And the manner by which Ray thrashed the brutally corrupted Indian political hierarchy through a simple story deserves countless salutations. If the message of “Hirak Rajar Deshe” is strong, the performances are stronger. Robi Ghosh as Bagha & Tapen Chattopadhyay as Goopi were simplicity churned with rebellion. Soumitra Chattopadhyay as the revolutionary Udayan Pandit , Santosh Dutta as the Scientist & Utpal Dutta as the devil himself shocked the spectators. This film was produced by West Bengal Development Corp. Technically & Philosophically “Hirak Rajar Deshe” is an unbelievable achievement. A must watch!
