Madhav lives with his widowed mother in India. His mother arranges his marriage with a U.S. settled young woman named Laxmi, they get married, and Madhav re-locates to the U.S. where Laxmi lives with her sister, Reena. After sometime, Madhav invites his mom to live with them, to which she agrees. Upon arrival in the U.S. she does not find herself very welcome in a household run chiefly by Reena and Laxmi, who loathe her and anything she attempts to do. Things change for the better when Madhav's mom wins a million dollar lottery and very soon becomes accepted by everyone in the household. But this does not last long, as she wants to return home and does not find herself respected enough. Her son and his family attempt to convince her to stay on, she changes her mind and decides to stay on - only to find that she has misplaced her winning lottery ticket - and finds herself back to square one on the receiving end of an embittered Reena and Laxmi.
