    I Hate Luv Storys rating: 6 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 02 Jul 2010)

    Karan Johar has been termed for making films only with or for Shah Rukh Khan, but last few years he proved it wrong by producing different films, with different star cast and minus Shah Rukh Khan { Dostana, Kurbaan, Wake Up Sid,etc}. All the themes were different from his style of cinema, most of which were widely accepted. This time he comes back in his own forte of Romantic film, but with more of spoof on his type of cinema.

    “I Hate Love Stories” is story about Jay {Imran Khan} who works as an assistant to Vir Kapoor {Samir Soni} , a film maker who makes only love stories. Jay does not believe in love and the kind of films Vir makes, he just works out there so he can make good money out of it. On other side there is Simran {Sonam Kapoor} who makes props for films and loves romantic films and believe totally in love. She has everything perfect for her including a loving fiancé Raj {Samir Dattani}. Simran joins Vir Kapoor’s team for his next film and vir assigns Jay under her. Thus starts a new relationship between Jay and Simran which is mix of love and hate. Things change for simran, but jay remains the same. What happens next is all the film about.

    Story is typical popcorn type film, but the treatment in first half works brilliantly. Especially on the digs over the typical bollywood romantic films of recent times. The whole dig angle makes the typical boy-girl hate drama refreshing and entertaining. Second half follows with the drama and again typical change in relationship. Sadly it does not match with the first half, but still is far better than usual run of the mill kind of films. Same goes for the screenplay, there are some superb scenes in first half like Jay with his girlfriend meeting Simran and Raj, the whole Raj Simran angle, Jay having dinner at simrans house, Idhar udhar ki baatein- wagaira wagaira and many more. But then the repetitive scenes and bit of dragging second half weakens the charm the film had in the first half. But thanks to the humor part the film manages to be on the right track around the climax. The dialogs and one liner are brilliant and witty. They add up to Jay’s character and make him livelier.

    Camera work is good and all the locations used in second half reminds you of all the romantic films of recent times.

    Music is sweet and goes well with the mood of the film. Bahara, Title song, Jab mila tu, Bin tere are superbly shot and used very well in the film. Sadka is a good song, but its timing hampers the flow of the film.

    Punit Malhotra adds up another feather to Karan Johar production camp and has done a decent job. The whole feel good, popcorn romance, youth based issues, etc has been tackled very well in the film and it reaches its destined audience. He should have worked out bit more freshness in the dramatic scenes where the film turns out to be bit repetitive and dragging. But never less rest all factors work in favor of the film and credit does goes to the debutant director. We hope next time he gives a newness in the whole film unlike this one where it was just in the first half.
    Imran Khan Gives a stellar performance in the first half, all his jokes, one liner, and reactions are superb. He fumbles in the second half at the dramatic scenes. But if you take him out of this film there is a huge vacuum. We wish he does such type of films rather than those mindless action flicks. Sonam is looking nice and sweet. She had her own charm and manages to keep your eyes glued to her, but on performance basis, she too fumbles in the dramatic scenes and falls even low than imran. Samir dattani, Samir soni, Ketki dave and rest all were impressive.

    So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

    Dum hai first half mein total dhamaal hai, second mein kaafi repetitive scenes and dragging hai. If only they had kept the same pace and mood of the film in second half the movie would had been much better. But despite of these minor flaws the film is proper entertaining and gives a feel good effect. And for all those who hate typical bollywood love stories, do watch this one and you can enjoy the sycastic comments of Imran over the typical bollywood love stories. Good attempt.

    Ratings : 3 - 3.25 / 5 {For some good humor in first half}
