My Rating

Iti Mrinalini rating: 7 out of 10(sayantan das wrote on 07 Aug 2011)

It is after a long time that we are fortunate enough to get a film from Aparna Sen.And this time its even more special because it is somehow related to her own life.I watched the film and am quite sure that its not going to fade out very soon from our mind. After watching Iti Mrinalini various question popped up on my mind.I felt that the problem which Mrinalini was facing in the movie is universal and many of us are its victim.Mrinalini is in search for the right person to be her life partner and in this regard we feel sense of oneness with her.
The film follows the pattern of bildungsroman. After passing out from college,Mrinalini(youth played by Konkana Sensharma) wanted to be an actor. She was in love with her college mate, who supported the Naxals(Shaheb Bhattacharya). He was fugitive. He was on the run when he was shot dead by policemen.Mrinalini was fortunate enough to taste success in her youth and in a very short span of time she was a celebrity. In the course of time she entangled herself with her director,Siddhartha(Rajat Kapoor). It was an extramarital affair for him.The relationship was a failure and it was very much predictable.Mrinalini was already a mother of a girl child. At this juncture of her life she was introduced to Chintan Nair(Kaushik Sen).He was a kind of anchorage to her,her support system.
All this while Mrinalini(now Aparna Sen)was recollecting her past. She now stands at a crucial juncture. She lost her glamour and charisma. She was cheated yet another time by Imtiaz(Priyangshu Chatterjee),a film director for whom she had a soft corner. She was ready to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills. She then checked her cell phone probably for one last time, she found some missed calls and two messages. The message read "aami aaschi" and the sender was Chintan. This rejuvenated her and she gained the spirit to live.It was already morning, she took her pet dog for morning walk, she was greeted by school children and others. The best part of the movie was in store for us.We see a young fellow(Shaheb Bhattacharya) running for his life.He was chased by the police. At that very moment we remember the scene where Abhi(Shaheb Bhattacharya),Mrinalini's boyfriend in college, was on the run and was shot dead by police. But to our greatest astonishment we hear a firing sound and Mrinalini falling down on the ground. The scene sends a chill down our spine and here the camera work was at its best. The zooming effect was reduced gradually.Perhaps the fate of Mrinalini took her to the ideal person. It is just a mere conjecture that may be Abhi was her ideal partner and they are united at the end of the movie.
The music was good, they were used pretty well.Anjan Dutta lent his voice to Rajat Kapoor and that suited well.Konkona was as usual brilliant.Actually acting was overall very good.Aparna Sen was equally good in acting and directing.Srijit's presence was a surprise and i liked it.Iti Mrinalini was a treat to watch.I would like to give it 3.5/5.
