Jackie Shroff was born into a Gujarati family in Mumbai on 1st Feb. 1957 as Jaikishan to Kakubhai & Rita Shroff. He has a brother – Hemant Shroff.
An avid Dev Anand fan, Jackie got ‘blink-and-you-miss’ roles in Dev movies Heera-Panna (1973) and Swami Dada(1982). However, his first big break came in the form of Subhash Ghai’s Hero (1983) which made him a star overnight.
Alongwith Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff was often considered as a contender to the throne for Amitabh’s position in the 1980s. The duo gave a number of hits like Yudh (1985), Andar Bahar (1984), Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1988) & Parinda (1988).
Teri Meherbaniyaan(1984) was his first solo hit after Hero and was soon to be followed by various movies which received lukewarm response at the theatres such as Shiva Ka Insaaf (1984), Paisa Yeh Paisa (1984), Palay Khan (1985), Dahleez (1986), Allah Rakha (1986) etc. It was as Big Bro in Ram Lakhan (1988) that the scene changed dramatically and Jackie came to be accepted in roles with serious overtone. He followed this up with good performances in Parinda (1988), Khal Nayak (1992), Gardish (1993) & 1942: A Love Story (1993), Rangeela (1995). His memorable roles include the freedom fighter "Shubhankar" in 1942: A Love Story (1993), "Raj Kamal" a famous actor in Rangeela (1995), and "Chunnilal" in the film Devdas (2002). He was also applauded for his performance in the Bengali film Antar Mahal (2005). Jackie Shroff’s turned Producer with Grahaan (2000), Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai (2000), Boom (2003) & Sandhya (2003) by forming a Production Company Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited with wife Ayesha. All movies failed disastrously at the box office.
The latent talent of Jackie Shroff was first rewarded by the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Parinda in 1990. This was followed by consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1995 for 1942: A Love Story and in 1996 for Rangeela.
Jackie is currently portraying the role of Sai Baba of Shirdi in Deepak Balraj Vij’s movie Malik Ek. The film is expected to hit the theatres in 2008. Ek- The Power of One, directed by Sangeeth Sivan is also scheduled to release in March, 2008.
Jackie has two children – Jai (son) and Krishna (daughter). He is known to be one of the most stylish film personalities and his close association with designer Anna Singh has helped him maintain his style and persona. He is also known in the industry for his philanthropic efforts for the less fortunate.
Before joining movies, Jackie was known to be a Snake Charmer! He was also a famous model for Charminar cigarettes and aimed to be known as a villain in Bollywood one day.
