Jahar Roy was one of the exceptionally talented actors who had emerged in the Bengali Film Industry.
Jahar Roy was born on 19th September, 1919 in Barishal (Presently Bangladesh).In 1936, he passed Matriculation from Narkeldanga High School he had completed his IA from B.N.College of Patna in 1938. After this although he joined college for graduation, but he couldn’t complete it and left in the fourth year for acting. He had worked as a medical representative and also opened a Tailoring shop in Patna. He had done variety of jobs. He got a job as the proof reader in the press of University of Patna. From 1938 to 1942, he had worked with East India Pharmaceutical Company.
His desire to become an actor had made him so determined that he came to Kolkata with only Rs.50 in his pocket. With the help of renowned writer Narayan Gangopadhay , he got introduced to director Ardhendu Gangopadhay .He made his debut in Sushil Majumder’s “Sahara”. But his first released movie was “Purboraag” in 1947. His movies “A jahar se jahar noi “ and “ Bhanu Goyenda Jahar assistant” had given him a different recognition as a comic actor. He was highly appreciated by film critics and audiences for his mind blowing performances in all these movies. ”Manomoyi Girls’ School” (1935), “ Chadmabeshi” (1944), “Sahar Theke Dure” (1942) , “Pather Dabi” (1947), “ ChiroKumar Sabha “(1956) , “Palatak”(1963 “Goopi Gayen Bagha Bayen” (1968 ) are some of his memorable movies. He had even directed one show for Binapani opera. He was associated with Rang Mahal theatre till his last breath. He had even worked in different comic shows in radios. This great actor passed away on 1st August, 1977.
