    Worth a Shot...

In our Hindi Films we have certain mindsets which are created by our film makers from the past and thus have been registered in our mind. Especially subjects Like Jail, which a common man is not familiar with. But then there are some great films with Jail as their backdrop, like Do Aakhen Barah Haath, Teen Deewarein, New Delhi and many more. So how different is Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Jail’ than rest of Hindi films we have seen. Well in short will say welcome to ‘Jail of 2009’.

Jail is story of Parag Dixit {Neil Nitin Mukesh} a innocent common man who gets framed in a Drug Smuglling case. He is introduced to the dirty world of Jail where he meets few Convicts like Nawab {Manoj Bajpai}, Kabir {Arya Babber} and few people going through the trail and waiting for their verdict. He is supported by his fiancée Mansi {Mugdha Godse} and his mom from outside who are trying their best to get Parag out of Jail. But thing’s does not work in favor of Parag and it becomes a living hell for him inside the Jail. What happens next is the entire movie about.

Story is simple but treated in a different manner. Screenplay is weak in first half, but improves drastically in the second half. The movie starts with very slow pace and takes time to built the characters and the flow of film, once passed this the movie runs in full pace and does not lose the grip in the second half. Camera work is good. Editing is crisp and fine, but still fell something more could have been done in better favor of the film.

Music is good love to hum Saiyave and Milke Yun laga. Daata sun le is good, but needed this song in the crucial times as such songs have huge impact in this type of films. Bareili ke bazaar mein is strictly average. Background Music by Amar Mohile is impressive.

Madhur Bhandarkar brings us the Jail of 2009 with lots of reality and breaks the Filmi Jail myth we have in our mind. forget all those private cells where hero and another person shares the room- Out here all the under trials live in a single cell. Forget the way court hearings goes on in our Hindi films – Out here it’s as real as possible. So many reality based detailing has been done for this film, also you cannot ignore the huge amount of research done for creating such closer to reality type scenes. Madhur has a image of different theme based films with some hard hitting morbid scenes. Out here the morbid factor takes a back stage and has something for masses too. The message is good and worth appreciating. Sadly the sub plots in the films are loose and weak. Also the regular Jail-Court Scenes might look bit repetitive for normal audience. The treatment of the film is also bit slow especially in the first half, but second half does gets you back in the film.

On Performances basis Neil Nitin Mukesh rocks and has done a award winning performance as a silent sufferer. His body moments, his facial expressions, etc are perfect as per the character. Manoj Bajpai gives another performances as an silent viewer, he is so settle and controlled in this film. Watch out for his one minute hot temper scene where he loses everything. Mugdha is strictly average. G.K Desai delivers a Natural performance. Rahul Singh gives an impressive performance. Arya Babber looks good in this film. Rests all are perfect as per their character.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain kaafi dum hain in terms of performances and second half. But something is missing in the film especially the weak first half. Thanks to the unusual subject, good performances and never seen details about the subject grips you throughout the film and makes it a worthy reason to visit the JAIL.

    Ratings – 3/5
