‘Jaaneman’ doesn’t quite sound like a Bengali film does it? In any case at times from the name one can hardly make out the launguage of the film. However in this case, it is indeed a Bengali film with Soham and Koel in the lead roles. It can’t be called a love story in the true sense rather it can be considered as probably the second road film from Tollywood because nearly the entire story literally takes place on the road.
Deba immedietly falls in love with Rhea when he sees her at a bus stand and later on when he is at the station, they come across each other. Deba takes Rhea and the person accompanying her to Cooch Behar, but on the way, while taking fuel from a petrol pump, he comes to know the truth. That is Rhea ‘s father had fixed her marriage with his girfriend’s brother (yup, he used to ill treat her mother and so it was a troubled existence for her)and she was against this so she asks Deba to take her to Kolkata. On the way Deba starts telling his story and says that even Sridhar,a notorious gangster was after him for certain reasons. Then starts their journey to Kolkata with both Sridhar’s men and Rhea’s suitor after them with his men hot on their heels. They manage to confront the couple, but each time they manage to escape. Deba takes Rhea to her grandmother’s house only to discover that she is not welcome by her uncle so she leaves.
Both Sridhar and Rhea’s suitor confront the couple for one last time with their goons. The end result, we all know.
Jaaneman is different because it is the road film from Tollywood, nothing else. The plot is nothing new and has it’s absurdities. When Rhea arrives at the airport to catch a flight to Kolkata, one can see it is the Kolkata airport. Also when she did manage to book a ticket? One also can’t just arrive at the airport before the plane takes off and board it! The action sequences are hilarious in all similar films nowadays. The hero gets beaten black and blue, but simply refuses to die. Rather he rises from the dead as he has simply has to defeat the evil forces no matter what happens! This film is no exception. One just can’t understand whether going to foreign locations for the songs adds anything. Actually it doesn’t . The songs don’t catch our attention at all.The performances are so so.
Well , only the name remains worth remembering about this film since it is a Bengali film.
