    Lekha Shankar (Shabana Azmi) lives with her sister in Bombay. She marries Shekar Prasad (Shekar Kapoor) in a court marriage as both their parents have objections on their marriage. Their friends Sushma (Zarina Wahab) and Dinesh (Amol Palekar) are happy with this news and they inform them that they too will go for a court marriage soon. Sushmas father wants her to marry a boy who is either a qualified doctor or an engineer and earns a good salary. Sushma earns money for her family through a job and also by giving tuitions. Shekar insists that Lekha go to his town and live with his family for a couple of days for a change of environment as Lekha is geeting weaker day by day in the fast paced Bombay life. Lekha finds the atmoshpere really good when she reach there. She gets to met Gori (Kiran) who is Shekhar's sister. Gori loves Divakar (Devendra). Shekars mother is old fashioned and superstitious. Lekha, being a modern girl, doesent like her behaviour. Shekars mother arranges Gori's marriage with a 35 year old man who had already been married once. Lekha tries to convince Shekars mother but she asks Lekha to stay away from all this. When Lekha asks Divakar to run away with Gori, even he refuses ro take such a step. Lekha wants to save Goris life from becoming hell. What step will she take? Will she be able to convince Divakar or not?
