Jhootha Hi Sahi rating: 6 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 22 Oct 2010)

Every few months Hollywood churns out soft lovey-dovey sweet candy floss type romantic films. Most of them have almost the same plot, but then they differentiate it out by locations, background, work profile, etc. They have perfect blend of emotional scenes, romantic moments, humor and the start power. Director Abbas Tyrewala brings us another romantic film after the super success of his last film – Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Without comparing with the earlier flick, let’s find out what lies beneath this latest film of his.

Jhootha Hi Sahi is story of Siddharth {John Abraham} who runs a book shop in London along with his friends Omar {Raghu Ram} from Pakistan and Amit. One day he keeps getting calls from unknown strangers who want to commit suicide, he tries to stop them and gives them reason to live. Next day he comes to know that a N.G.O accidently gave his number as the helpline number. Siddharth agrees to help them and tries to convince the strangers not to commit suicide. In this process he gets a call from Mishika {Pakhi} with whom he later starts having friendly conversation. Siddharth starts bluffing about himself and makes Mishika feel good. On other side Mishika comes to Siddharths stores to buy a book and when Siddharth sees her he falls in love with her. Thus starts the complicated love story between the two strangers.

Story is fresh and sweet, still it has some shades from Rishi Kapoor - Neetu Singh Starrer Rafoo Chakkar. As all romantic movies need this movie too has some sweet moments which add up as positive points in the screenplay. The whole Mishikha at Siddharths store chapter, Siddharth at Mishikha’s DVD store, The Chinese Dinner, Mishika meeting Siddharths friends gives the movie the needed freshness. On the negative part the narration is quite slow as in comparison with normal romantic movies. There are some unwanted moments in the second half which could have been avoided. The whole climax scene between Mishika and Kabir looked forced and hurried up. Camera work is nice and gives the whole international romantic movie feel. Editing needed to be bit more crisp, especially in the second half.

What’s wrong with A.R.Rahman ? In a romantic movie like this we need some nice romantic, peppy numbers. Some songs which keep you connected with the film. Sadly nothing matches up to these requirements from the maestro’s side. Still Cry Cry, Mere Chehre ki do have some good visual appeal and goes well with the film. Title track is wasted in end credits. Pam Pam and Maiya should have been totally avoided.

Director Abbas Tyrewala tried to do something different than his last film, but decided to play in the same genre. Thus there might be comparisons with his last film, and to be frank if compared this one falls quite low than the earlier one. But on individual merit, this movie has its own reason to stand on its own. The whole lies angle mixed with sweet moments with romantic background supported by some interesting friends makes this flick enjoyable. Sadly the lack of emotional connection, bad choice of heroine supported by equal bad music adds ups as the negative point.

John Abraham is sweet and looks cute in his new geeky kind of looks. He essays his role with total justification and manages to keeps you interested in the film till he is there. Pakhi looks overweight and bit old in some scenes and sweet in some, but overall a bad choice for such subject. She has acting skills, but out here in such movies we need a chemistry, which is there but not up to the mark. Raghu Ram is fantastic. R.Madhavan is wasted and does not suit in this half baked role. Rest all actors’ gives good support.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai, sweet sad um hai, but thodi slow hai and gaane mein kutch khaas dum nahi hai. But the movie works for John Abraham, the interesting theme, some sweet moments and overall international romantic film feel. Kaash it had some emotional moments supported by some brilliant music the movie would had been picture perfect. So at end the movie is not at par with the director’s earlier flick, but yeh bhi chalegi if you like sweet romantic flicks.
