My Rating

  • A very very unusual film

Jodi Ekdin rating: 5 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 19 Apr 2010)

Riingo made his debut with Kranti, followed it up with Love and then Risk (a remake of Cellular), films which are completely different in nature.Riingo is always, the director, cinematographer, editor and even at times a part of the creative departments of the film he directs so it is expected that his films will have an engaging storyline, excellent cinematography and will have no additional baggage and will be edited well so as to have just the right number of scenes.

Jadi Ekdin which is about urban relationships and the problems that an urban couple faces has Indreneil Sengupta(of Angshumaner Chhabi fame) and Priyanka Sarkar with Saheb Chatterjee playing a very unusual yet important role.Priyanka whom we usually se in commercial films where she has a glam spoilt girl image is completely different here as is Indraneil Sengupta .The film is about Neil and Nikita are a very urban couple who have their share of problems which affect their daily life.Nikita has sacrificed her career as a singer and come down to Kolkata from Mumbai just to be with Neil. Neil has a presentation one day for a project which if it passes off well, will make him the V.P and Nikita also has her first major recording the same day. Neil does not get the contract thanks to Nikita’ fault, but Nikita’ show is a success. Afterwards they go to celebrate by having dinner in a restaurant, but they quarrel after which Nikita goes away in a taxi, but meets with an accident and later expires in a hospital. The next day Neill gets up only to realize it was a bad dream. However what happens the entire day is that whatever has happened in his dream happens in his real life. He tries to explain it to Nikita, but can not do so. The only change from the sequence of events is that after the celebration dinner, on the way back home, instead of Nikita, it is Neil who passes away after they met with an accident.
Saheb over here plays an unusual role of a magician as in not in the traditional sense but one who is our fate. One who can call the shots for every moment of our lives and one who has the power to change things or make things happen. He keeps on appearing like a magician at unexpected times and his character is probably one of the most interesting things about the film. Since it is an urban story and unusual in nature, it is not likely to appeal to the mass as it is not clearly made for them. Also they will find it a little slow as the pace is slow at times and the music is clearly not for them. Much is expected from Priyanka after this film and people will start seeing her in a different way.Saheb is excellent as the magician or our ‘Nemesis’. The cinematography is excellent. The music is very different and quite nice.Shreya Ghoshal has sung a few songs in this film without charging any money. The last song in the film where Priyanka is performing her first ever song live is very good and could have been far better, but unfortunately there is too much music and orchestration which completely drowns the voice and makes it inaudible when the singer sings the song at a high pitch.Riingo and Rituparna appear as a part of the audience in a sequence. The members of the band Chandrabindoo also appear in a song. Incidentally two of them, Anindya and Chandril are the lyricists of this film. Renowned editor Rabi Ranjan Maitra makes an unusual appearance in the film as a conductor with a long wig just like the Western conductors of a few centuries back. He does well.
