John Abraham was born on December 17th 1972. His father is a Malayali Saint Thomas Christian architect, from Alwaye, Kerala in India while his mother Phiroza Irani is part of the Bombay’s Parso Community. His parsi name is “farhan” to which his father being a catholic added “Abraham” as a respect for bible and named him John. John has a younger brother, Alan. Abraham did his schooling from the Bombay Scottish School and attended Jai Hind College, where he was the captain of the football team. He was good sportsman, captaining the college football team. He did his MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies. Before entering the film industry, he worked with a media firm called Time & Space Media Entertainment Promotions Ltd., which however closed down due to financial problems. Later he worked for Enterprises-Nexus as a media planner.
After the Gladrags Manhunt Contest, and a series of commercial advertisements came his first break with the movie Jism, in 2003. The film was a decent hit at the box–office and his work got noticed widely. In the same year, the movies Saaya (2003) and Paap (2003) released out of which none made a mark at box-office. His first blockbuster smash hit the silver screens in 2004 which was Dhoom. He played an antihero and was the show stealer.
Following his success in Dhoom, Kaal and Garam Masala released in the year 2005, which performed fairly. He had a major role in Deepa Mehta’s Water released in 2005. This movie was based on a serious subject of the fate of Indian widows in the traditional modern society, which became popular overseas, exposing him to a much wider audiences. The film was nominated at nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Academy Awards. He went on doing many more movies like Baabul, Zinda, and Taxi No 9211, Kaabul Express in 2006 which did average business at the box office but were critically acclamied. His most recent movies have been No Smoking and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal released in 2007.
His debut film Jism (2003) faired well on the box office. However, it was followed by Saaya and Paap, none of which could leave an impact on the box office. The situation didn’t improve much for him as his films kept on doing a poor or an average business at the box office. Though, he did got critical acclaim and appreciation worldwide, for his movie Water, (2005), he could not deliver superhits, his only smash hit being Dhoom(2004). Among his releases in 2006, Taxi No 9211 and Kabul Express were fairly sucessful.
John is doing Deepa Mehta’s new film Luna in the role of an environmental activist starring Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz and Chris Cooper which will go on floors around Aug-Sept 2008. Also,in 2008,John Abraham will be seen in a Nagesh Kukunoor starrer film Aashayein starring Sonal Sehgal,Prateeksha Lonkar while the story is of a compulsive gambler who discovers new meanings of fortune and life throughe some dramatic turn of events. Also he is currently doing Shriram Raghvan's Happy Birthday and Karan Johar's romantic-comedy.
His debut movie Jism got him nominated for the Filmfare Best Debut Award. He bagged more filmfare nomination for negative roles in Dhoom(2005) and Zinda (2007). In the year 2007 he also got nominated under the category of Best Supporting Actor, Filmfare. His movies got him national and international critical acclaim. he got the Rajiv Gandhi Award for his contribution to Bollywood in 2006. further. He was awarded for his contribution to indian cinema in 2007 by the Giant International Awards.
Before joining the film industry, had John Abraham joined Kishore Namit Kapoor acting lab to work on his acting skills and successfully completed a course on acting while doing several modelling assignments. He has been a star footballer in his college days. He was seen at St.Andrews ground in Bandra at the inauguration of the K.Raheja Universal Prestige Cup with the likes of model and fashion choreographer Marc Robinson and T.V. Actor Chetan Hansraj. John has been dating actress Bipasha Basu since 2002.
He is also the brand ambassador for Castrol Power 1 and Yamara Marque and has also endorsed Wrangler jeans, Yamaha Bikes, Fastrack eye gear and Samsung cell phones. He was the first Indian Brand ambassador for Diet Pepsi.
John Abrahim loves doing social work.He associates himself deeply in the social causes and urges youngsters also to join hands in this humanity mankind.”I work for social causes i address.I love animals and I work for PETA.I have my own brigade called John' brigade for Habitat For Humanity,Habitat for Humanity is a Jimmy Carter foundation project” is what John said when asked about his work. He was also associated with the famous Lilavathi hospital of Mumbai where he donated a cheque of 10 lakhs towards the hospital funds.
