Jayanti Bose (Aparna Sen) takes up the job of governess in Roy villa against the wishes of her family. She has to look after five extremely naughty children, the nephews and nieces of Sanjoy Roy (Uttam Kumar), a rich and arrogant man. Sanjoy’s sister had committed suicide. The children had successfully ragged and driven away twelve governesses earlier. However, Jayanti gains their affection when she saves them from their uncle’s wrath. Jayanti earns Sanjoy's respect and regard when she skillfully prevents the eldest girl from eloping. Previously a stickler for routine, Sanjoy gives Jayanti all the responsibilities of the children. Jayanti brings a change in their lives through music and love. Mala, Joy's fiancée, comes to stay with her brother, Bikash. Jayanti, in love with Joy, silently watches the pair together. Mala is soon jealous of Jayanti and Joy's evident regard for her. Mala repeatedly insults Jayanti and accuses her of trying to trap Joy. Jayanti leaves without telling anyone. The children and Joy all miss Jayanti badly. Mala tries but fails to befriend the children. She even hits them. Incited by Bikash, she tries to send the children to boarding school. Joy foils the plan. Mala leaves forever after an argument with Joy. Meanwhile, the children come to know about the boarding school plan and run away to Jayanti, leaving a letter for Joy. Joy goes to Jayanti's house and declares his love for her. He takes her back with him, along with the children.
