His paternal uncle is director Subodh Mukherjee, whilst his maternal uncles were Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar. His brothers are Deb Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee who was married to actress Tanuja. Their daughters are actresses Kajol and Tanisha. His niece is Rani Mukerji.
Joy was paired up with Sadhana and Asha Parekh in several films.
He started his career in 1960 with the movie ...Love in Simla. In the late 60’s roles for Joy started drying up as stars such as Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna grew in popularity.
Joy then produced and directed Humsaaya but the movie did not do well and his subsequent films as producer or director did not do too well. Despite a late success with home production Ek Baar Muskura Do (1972) with brother Deb Mukherjee and later to be sister-in-law Tanuja, Joy faded from the film scene. His last success came with him directing Chailla Babu, a film starring Zeenat Aman and Rajesh Khanna.
