Juhi Chawla is the first born in the Chawla Family. She won the Miss India Contest in 1984 and subsequently made her debut in films with Sultanat (1986). She shot to fame in 1988 with the Blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak for which she won the Filmfare Best Debut Award. She starred in The Kannada Blockbuster Premaloka the same year. She had a small role in the super-hit Chandni.
She was nominated for two best actress awards at the Filmfare Awards for her work in the hits Pratibandh (1990) and Bol Radha Bol (1992). She starred in the hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 opossite Shahrukh Khan.
In 1993, she starred in 4 high profile films -. Her first release was the hit Lootere where she portrayed a glamorous role. She next starred in the critically acclaimed Aaina. Her third release was the Super-Hit Romantic-Comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke. She was highly praised for her performance in the film and won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for it. Her last release of the year was the Blockbuster Darr opposite Shahrukh Khan and Sunny Deol and the film went ahead to become one of the biggest hits of the decade.
However her releases between 1994-5 did not do as well.
She however saw a revival in 1996, as Loafer became a commercial success and earned critical acclaim for her performance as a battered wife in Daraar. Her performance in Daraar earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
In 1997, she starred in 4 high profile films - Ishq, Yes Boss, Deewana Mastana and Mr And Mrs Khiladi. She was nominated the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in Yes Boss, which became a success at the Box Office. Ishq and Deewana Mastana both became huge successes at the Box Office. Altough Mr And Mrs Khiladi did not suceed at the Box Office, her comic timing was praised.
In 1998, her film Duplicate, though not a success at the Box Office earned her the Bollywood Movie Award for Most Sensational Actress and in 1999, her film Arjun Pandit became a hit.
Her Subsequently starred in several films between 2000-01 most of which failed to do well.
In 2003, she earned critical recognation for her performance in the acclaimed films Jhankaar Beats and 3 Deewarein. Her performance in 3 Deewarein earned her the Star Screen Award for Best supporting Actress and her performance in Jhankaar Beats earned her the Sansui Best Supporting Actress Award.
In 2004, her only release, the Punjabi Film Des Hoya Pardes was a huge success both, critically and commercially.
In 2005, her perfomance in the acclaimed film My Brother Nikhil was highly praised and her film Paheli was also critically acclaimed. In 2006, she was appreciated for her performance in Bas Ek Pal.
In 2007 she won positive reviews for her performances in Salaam E Ishq and Swami, both of which resulted in commercial failures.
In 2008, she was noticed for Bhootnath were she not only acted but also sang playback anand her other releases, Krazzy 4 and Kismat Konnection performed Average Bussiness.
She has produced th films Asoka, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Chalte Chalte. While the former two were flops, Chalte Chalte became a hit.
She is married to Jai Mehta, a millionaire industrialist in India. They co-owns the IPL team Knight Riders with Shah Rukh Khan. She has a son and a daughter.
She was very attached to her mother who died in 1998 when car ran her over.
