Ritwik Ghatak's last film featured himself as the drunken and spent intellectual Neelkanta who goes on a plague journey through Bengal and reconciles himself with his wife. He is accompanied by Nachiketa and Bangabola, a young refugee from Bangladesh. On the day the are joined by a Sanskrit teacher. The episode narrating also includes encounters with Shatrujit who was once a noted writer but who now writes pornography; a retired trade union teacher and Panchanna Ustad who makes masks for Chhou dancers. The film ends up with Neelkantha meeting a group of naxalite students wanted by the police; he argues politics with them and is shot in a police ambush the next morning. Neelkantha dies with a quote from a Manik Bandopathyay story about a weaver who moves on empty loom because one must do something.
