Ritwik Ghatak's last film featured himself as the drunken and spent intellectual Neelkanta who goes on a plague journey through Bengal and reconciles himself with his wife. He is accompanied by Nachiketa and Bangabola, a young refugee from Bangladesh. On the day the are joined by a Sanskrit teacher.
