Inder Saxena, a builder (contractor) from Delhi with an attitude that money is the foremost thing in the world is sent by his maternal uncle to a small town Pratapgahd to supervise on a project's progress. A reluctant Inder comes to Pratapgarh after being persuaded by his uncle. There he meets his college mate Prakash (Vinod Mehra), his college professor Daya Shankar Sharma (Sri Ram Laggoo) & his daughter Rama (Rakhee). Womanizer Inder sets his eyes on Rama but Prakash, who secretly admires Rama tells Inder (Amitabh Bachchan) that she is the kind of girl who can't be lured with the power of money. But, Inder has the perception that women want only money bets Prakash that he will lure Rama with his money. Every trick of his fails but ultimately he publishes a book of her poems and gifts it to her. A surprised Rama is very delighted with this gestuse. One day Inder asks Rama to accompany him. Rama promises to go but has to lie to her father that she is going to see off Laila (Farida Jalal). When Daya Shankar finds the truth he & Prakash unexpectedly drop in Inder's house where they find Rama in Inder's bedroom. Anguished Dayashankar scorns Rama for lying. Rama leaves the house for ever and while heading to Delhi is robbed for which she has to get down form the train. Distressed Rama gets the help of station Master Nandalal (Asrani) who shelters Rama in his house, coincidentally the same trains meets with an accident. 24 people die in the mishap. Rama passes of as one of the dead from an unrecognizable damaged body. Assuming that to be Rama a letter is sent by the police to Daya Shankar about her death. Every one is shocked with the news. Inder who is feeling guilty for the incident believes that Rama is alive & continues to search for her. Rama, to forget her sorrows, takes up to learn singing & becomes a renowned singer. One day while singing on radio she is heard by Inder who finds her out & tells this to Prakash. Eventually all the misunderstadings & differences are settled down & Rama & Inder come together.
