Jyotsna Gupta was born in Kolkata in the year 1914.Her father was Shankar Gupta. Mr. Gupta was a clore associate with the pioneer of Bengali Cinema Hiralal Sen. Mr. Gupta was also the first Bengali film operator and will be remembered in the history of Bengali Film.
Jyotsna had a knack of acting from her childhood. She made her debut in the film “Chakranta”. It was a silent movie. Next she acted in another silent movie “Chashar Meye”. As ‘chhoto bou’ in that film she drew attention of the audience and the critic. Her first takie was “Taruni”, it was produced by Kali Films and was directed by Priyanath Ganguly. There after she acted in many films. Her acting in double version film “Bidrohi” brought her immense fame and popularity. He major film were “Tarubala”, “Pather Seshe”, “Indira”, “Sashinath”, “Parashmani”, “Sakuntala”, “Janani”, “Matir Ghar”, “Desher Datri” etc. In 1950 there happened major legal battle regarding her marriage life which was much talked about and full of uniqueness. Jyostna was a mother of one son. She died in Kolkata on October 18th, 1944.
