Karimuddin Asif (June 14, 1924 - March 9, 1971) is most well known for his directorial debut - Phool which had the best names of Hindi cinema at that time - Prithviraj Kapoor, Durga Khote and Suraiya. Some Hindi cinema pundits however beg to differ saying that his is the name that is associated with the greatest Hindi film of all times - Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Asif's original plan was to have Chandramohan opposite Nargis in the story of Anarkali. Unfortunately Chandramohan passed away prematurely and Asif took time to rethink his plans. He utilised the interim time period by directing Hulchul(1951). The new plan for Mughal-e-Azam had Madhubala and Dilip Kumar and the shooting began. The film was under production for nearly 9 years and when it was ultimately released, its success surpassed all precedence and till date remains a record. Recently the film was given a new feel by colouring it. After Mughal-e-Azam Asif started planning for his first colour film Love and God. However this time too luck played foul and the main cast of the film Guru Dutt passed away. Asif continued with Sanjay Dutt, but suddenly the director himself died during the production of the film. In 1986 his widowed wife Akhtar Asif revived the film and it was released in incomplete form.
