  • What’s so ‘Kaalo’ about it?

    Kaalo rating: 3 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 17 Dec 2010)

    Indian Horror films have been growing a lot in compared to what we use to see few decades ago. Though that time those types of horror films were as per the demand, but now with the international standards growing so high, we too need to grow. There is a still lot of time to reach the level out there, but on positive note films like 13B and few others have shown the rise level of Indian Horror films. Also most of the horror films are shown in darkness or night time, when the ghost, spirits spooks out. We have an unusual horror film named ‘Kaalo’ which claims to be India’s first Day light horror film. Humm sounds interesting, let’s find out.

    “Kaalo” is story of a Witch who has traumatized the village of ‘Kulbhata’ some two hundred and fifty years ago. She was buried by the villagers, but death dint take her. Thus the villagers had abandoned that place. For more than two and half decade no one ever wandered in those parts. Until one day some Archeology people accidently dig open her grave. On other side a passenger bus which decides to go through a different route accidently pass through Kulbhata. Little did they know that they will be victim of Kaalo. What happens next is what all the film about.

    Story is different than the regular horror films. But have loads of typical shades of such films too. Screenplay is weak in first half and has loads and loads of loop holes. But the whole Witch part, the whole Kaalo Attacking in Bright Day Light, The Drugged guys reactions to the incidents after the drug effect and few more scenes are brilliant. But then the whole build up of characters travelling in the bus, the lousy attacks on the passengers, the melodramatic temple flag scene by paintal and many more scenes does not manage to keep you interested in the film. The makers show Kaalo as very powerful witch who has now converted into a creature with wings {No Explanation out here}. As per them she can fly in seconds and kill anyone, still then the survivors hide under a hut ?, what does Kaalo do after killing them or why kill them {again no justification}. And all those Aditya Shrivastav scenes where the Hanuman Chalisa chanting takes place while he is attacking Kaalo are so trashy.

    Cinematography is the best part of the film, all the shots are brilliant. But the major credit for this goes to the location, which is total virgin and raw. With such a novel idea and such a beautiful location the makers should had made wonders.

    Music is not required in such films and just to make the character building story the song is inserted in the film. Back ground music in horror films is very important. But out here it was terrible.

    Wilson Louis is a director with lots of creativity. We have seen his best work in ‘Ho Sakta Hai’ but went hay way in ‘Mallika’. But out here we give him full marks for making an unusual horror film which is totally shot and presented in broad day light. It’s only if he had worked bit more with the writing team to create some good story for this film. As the whole ghost chasing the victims one by one and killing them, etc has been shown to us from ages. Also the most important stuff in a horror film is spooky scenes. Sadly out here except for one or two mild scenes there is nothing scary in the film.

    Aditya Shrivastav was totally in his C.I. D hangover. Swini Khara did a decent job. Paintal hammed a lot. Aditya Lakhiya manages to impress. Rest all characters were just average.

    So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

    Concept mein to bahut dum hai, but uske alawa kutch khaas nahin hai. If you are a Horror film lover do watch this film for its unusual Day Light horror concept and the locations. But if you are expecting some scary scenes or spooky effects then it’s hard to get one in this flick, and you might end up saying ‘What’s so KAALO about it?’

    Ratings – 1.75/5 {For its Unusual Concept of Day Light horror}
