    Kahaani Of 'Kolkata' Through 'Bidya'

Kahaani rating: 8 out of 10

Expectations were tremendously huge for this movie. For at least 2 years, we heard of Vidya Balan doing a Sujoy Ghosh directorial in 'City of Joy' - 'Kolkata'. The teasers & trailers of the movie were called 'Explosive' as the movie looked too different. Adding to all of these, "The Dirty Picture" made the day for Vidya Balan & grabbed her a national award along with a row of other awards like Filmfare, IIFA etc. The role for Vidya in KAHAANI is extremely challenging for her and I think no one else could have done it better. Now let's discuss the movie...

Before we start talking about ‘Kahaani’, let me share all of you that from my childhood I use to crave for Suspense Thrillers. Films like Jewel Thief, Gumnaam, Teesri Manzil, Khamosh, Khel Khel Mein, Khiladi, Khoj, Desh Drohi, Bees Saal Baad, Dhund, Dhuan,Who Main Nahin, Kaun Kaisey and many more were among my any time movie watch list. The magic of these films was that the more you know about the film, more engrossed you are in the film and if the finale turns out totally opposite of your assumptions then it was full ‘Paisa Vasool’ time. Sadly in last few years the list ... » read more

Notwithstanding the write-ups of many a grim-jawed critic tip-toeing to delve deep in order to trace the "negatives", " Kahaani" has resurrected and transposed " Agatha Christie" in Indian filmdom. It is not merely a crime thriller that Indian silver screen has ever witnessed. But, it would not be wrong to brand " Kahaani" as POLITICALLY PARANOID THRILLER. Motherhood has been used as the mightiest impetus that may, if situations call for, bring about topsy-turvy to the system at large. The content in the capsule goes thus:-
Vidya Venkatesar Bagchi, a software ... » read more

    Kahaani Mein Too Many Twists

Kahaani rating: 8 out of 10

I had seen posters demanding to know if I had seen Arnab Bagchi all around town but I never tied it in with the movie until a friend pointed it out. Consequently I knew nothing about Kahani when I went to watch it. I just went to watch it because I had time to kill. And it was a largely enjoyable couple of hours.

It started with the dedications. Why don’t people copy edit the text before they flash it on screens! Grateful thanks are extended to the “Honorary Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee”. Honorary implies that her chief ministership is titular or nominal. Honorable ... » read more

"Kahaani" - An Edge of the Seat "Story"

Kahaani rating: 9 out of 10

    By Shiraj Dakshy(10 Mar 2012)

“Kahaani”, another power house performance by Vidya Balan, the story is of Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan), a software engineer from London who comes to Kolkata in search of her husband Arnab Bagchi (Indraneil Sengupta) who goes missing in Kolkata. The story revolves around how Vidya unfolds the mystery of her missing husband.

The main highlight of the movie is the tout story and screenplay by Sujoy Ghosh & Advaita Kala which keeps the audiences glued to their seat till the end. Each character is well defined and fits into the puzzle called “Kahaani”, truly a story ... » read more

Kahaani is the story of Vidya Bagchi, a seven-month-pregnant wife, who comes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. All she has is her memories about him, Vidya begins her relentless search for her husband Arnab. However, all clues seem to be in vain when everyone tries to convice her that her husband does not exist. Soon she realises that things are not as they seem. But She is determined to unravel the truth about her husband - for herself and her unborn child - even if it puts her life in danger.

It's reported that Vidya didn't like script at the first ... » read more

    Kahaani Review

Kahaani rating: 10 out of 10

Kahaani, what a movie. Masterpiece! If Vidya Balan was excellent in "The Dirty Picture", then in "Kahaani" she is outstanding. Contrast of roles for her, quite challenging. I must say, no actress could have essayed the role of Vidya Bagchi as Vidya Balan. Subdued acting at it's best. Music is quite brilliant, it depicts the essence of Kolkata. Vidhal Sekhar you rock with Kahaani.
If Dhobi Ghat showcased the city of Mumbai, Kahaani does the same for Kolkata. Parambrata (Bengali Actor) also supports Vidya, quite brilliant and charming as a young officer. He is the man ... » read more

Kahaani: Fact of fiction of fact

Kahaani rating: 8 out of 10

    By Kaustav Bakshi(16 Mar 2012)

What is Kahaani all about? Kahaani is, well, about a fiction…erm…a story. Kahaani, technically speaking, is also about storytelling…as in how to tell a story…Well, Kahaani is also about fabrication, what fiction usually does…and the truth literally turns out to be stranger than fiction…a truth which is fictive, but not impossible. And like all good kahaanis, Kahaani too unfolds catalyzing in every reel a nail-biting curiosity of “What happens next”, finally leaving you bewildered, baffled, and confounded. Once the initial bewilderment wanes and the kahaani sinks in (both ... » read more

    Kahaani - a riveting tale

Kahaani rating: 0 out of 10

Once upon a time,Marine Drive in Bombay was crowded with Bollywood cinema shooting. Then recently they shifted the entire equipment to NewYork and London with plenty of chubby Punjabis cracking horrid jokes. Then they once again came back, but this time to the rich mansions of Delhi. Thank you the director, Sujoy Ghosh tried something new in Kolkata, the city which always carried a cultural and emotional baggage with it. It's so easy to arouse the cultural complex of a Bong. The Durga Puja had offered an ideal chance for that. The story has festival running in backdrop. ... » read more

    A Kahaani extremely well told

Kahaani rating: 8 out of 10

    By Bhaskar Choudhury(20 Mar 2012)

Kahaani, starring Vidya Balan in the lead, is a riveting thriller that grabs hold of you within the first 5 minutes, and doesn't let go till the end credits roll.

A heavily pregnant Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan) arrives in Kolkata from the UK in search of her missing husband, Arnab. She lands up at Kalighat Police Station, where a young inspector Satyoki aka Rana (Parambrata Chatterjee) helps her in her search. The problems start when people start to deny that Arnab Bagchi ever existed......

To say any more would risk giving the story away, and this is one ... » read more

Film: "Kahaani"; Starring: Vidya Balan, Parambrato Chattopadhyay, Nawazuddin Siddiqui; Directed by: Sujoy Ghosh; Rating: ****

This is a great time to be a movie buff. Within a week of "Paan Singh Tomar", which should incontestably win Irrfan Khan the National Award for best actor, comes "Kahaani" in which Vidya Balan is so flawlessly resplendent that one suspects the next year's National Award too is already reserved for her. Dirty deeds forgotten.
