Right since the inception of Hindi Cinema, films based on books {Mythology, Folk Tales, Fables, etc} have always gained attention of its viewers. Gradually this moved to popular literature and later pot boiler novels. Sadly few decades back this trend took a huge backstage. But with changing times the trend came back with more daring subjects doing proper justice to the book. As most of the book lovers know that in the musical era novels written by popular writers such as James Hadley Chase, Gulshan Nanda, etc were total apt for our mainstream Hindi films. Similarly, in the recent times writer Chetan Bhagat too, developed the similar popularity among the youths. Out of his five novels we did witness two being remade in film format {3 Idiots & Hello} and one in making {Two States}. ‘Kai Po Che’ joins the gang as it is inspired by ‘3 Mistakes Of My Life’. So let’s find out how does it fare in its filmi avatar?

‘Kai Po Che’ is story of three friends Ishaan {Sushant Singh Rajput}, Omi {Amit Sadh} & Govind {Rajkumar Yadav} based in Ahmadabad. Together they decide to start a new business which involved their passion and that is cricket. Govind & Omi concentrate on the work front whereas Ishaan is busy training a raw talent Ali {Digvijay Deshmukh}. Just when their dreams were about to turn real, tragedy strikes and changes the whole scenario. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Story as we all know is based on popular novel by Chetan Bhagat. But, the screenplay adaptation for motion picture is superb. Every minute detail has been looked after. One can feel the local flavor in all the characters, topography and the events happening around. All these, along with fine performances by the lead actors make this movie total treat for its viewers. There are some fantastic scenes like – Trio’s chat in the cricket ground, Ishaan – Ali’s game followed by their bonding & training, Trio’s hang out, Govind’s frustration over loss of money by Ishaan, Vidya’s {Amrita Puri} chat with Ishaan, India winning the match moment followed by Ishaan trying to save Ali along with some good moments in the finale.
On the flip side, the riot scenes seems total filmy and lacks the hard hitting impact, Also Ishaan’s argument with party workers after earthquake seemed bit foolish as they all knew that this party was non secular and expecting help from them does not make sense. The finale too should have been bit more powerful, somewhat on the lines of ‘Rang De Basanti’, yet this one too is great and shall be remembered for long time. Camera work is of top notch and one can feel the basic essence of the film.

Music by Amit Trivedi is total touching, yet again should have been soul touching. The lyrics should have played a bigger role in such type of film. I personally loved ‘Manja’ & ‘Shehnai’ along with ‘Meethi Boliyaa’. All the songs have been brilliantly shot. The background score was up to the mark.

Abhishek Kapoor breaks down all the rumors of Farhan Akhtar ghost directing ‘Rock On’ with his great work in ‘Kai Po Che’. He selects an average book and converts it into a great piece of cinema. Loved his narration style and the way he blends cricket, politics and friendship. He gets full marks in extracting finest performance from his actors. Though as mentioned earlier the final impact should have been bit more powerful.

Sushant Sing Rajput is mind-blowing. Everything about him (his smile, anger, irritation, frustration, body language, etc) is flawless. You can see the whole passion of cricket and humanity on his face. Similarly, Amit Sadh gives great performance, wished he had lengthier role. Rajkumar Yadav is perfect when it comes to such type of roles and here too, he shines bright. Amrita Puri is sweet and charming. Manav Kaul was fantastic. Asif Basra and Digvijay Deshmukh along with Hemant Jha give good support. Gaurav Kapoor & Ajay Jadeja gives good friendly appearance.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hain Dum ?
Total dumdaar hain and is a must watch for all good cinema lovers. It’s soulful, fresh and enchanting. The movie had total potential to become an eternal masterpiece but fall bit low and ends up to a must watch type of film. The titles connect to the kite flying in western region of India and on similar ground would sum up my review by saying that this kite {movie} will fly high, without getting cut for long time.
