KAI POCHE: DEVELOP SPORTS TO DEVELOP A HEALTHY NATION
The end shot of Kai Poche sums it all, if the teacher is good and has given a good foundation to the student, the student would ultimately make a mark for himself under the sun. Indeed, watching Kai Poche in a multiplex, it was a pleasant surprise to observe the audience clapping in unison, a sort of salute to the teacher who stood tall against religious bigotry, against social ostracisation to see to it that the rough diamond that he had found is polished to become a dazzling star.
Kai Poche brings into relief various activities that we as a child enjoyed, but the present generation of children are not aware about, the game of marbles, as a matter of fact a child was questioning her parents, watching the scene panning out on the screen, what kind of a sport was this that he had not seen. Kai Poche, for the young and uninitiated provides a glimpse into the street play which was a part of social furniture which slowly but surely is becoming a part of folklore.
Kai Poche also has intelligently used the modern history of Gujarat and has meshed it into the story in an elegant manner, by choosing locations intelligently, as also using the metaphors of riots and the earthquake that shook the state to underline the fact in a rather oblique manner that the resilience of Gujratis to survive against all odds is what makes it a community to watch out for.
At the sociological level, it also points out to the incidences of malnutrition that are endemic in children who are living in confined geographical spaces, and has used Ali- the character as a pointer to the fact that perhaps this incident is more so prevalent among the young Muslim youth.
The three lead actors Amit Sadh, Sushant Singh and Raj Kumar Yadav underline the fact what small town friendship is all about and how friends from small town draw on each other’s strength and weaknesses to survive and sustain in the cruel world of the present times. The manner in which these three actors have graduated from television to mainstream cinema underlines the fact that now for the new generation good break in a television serial could pave the way to find a foothold in the world of cinema. It was happening in trickles earlier but Kai Poche would set the trend, and the fresh faces that audiences has been craving about, could be met through television serials.
Kai Poche in a very subtle manner also underlines the fact that the majority community has to come forward and provide the hand holding against all odds for the minority community so that they could come forward and integrate with the main society. However, it has taken the clichéd approach of introducing youth of modern times to politics by carving an identity through the catalyst of religion. But for the present generation who is warming up to enter politics, it could create an existentialist dilemma, as it has been pointed out that the other India or for the India that exists outside the metropolitan cities, and its representative youth it indeed is difficult to make a mark in politics without relying on crutches of religion or politics.
Kai Poche has also shown a potential for creation of a new job vertical of creation of sports consultancy for schools, and the debate that happened in the school about the need for sports underlines the mindset with which the teaching fraternity in the government aided schools still operates, of relying on learning by rote, and not encouraging sportsman spirit which is indeed the platform for transformation into a good human being.
There have been some comments by the few critics that the film has overdosed of Gujarati slang, but the moot point is, when one abuses, one takes recourse to the mother tongue, and if a Punjabi abuses in Punjabi or a Marathi uses Marathi for abusing, then what is wrong for Gujarati to abuse in Gujarati?
Kai Poche has raised the bar for the films of this genre which could be in the pipeline, especially those being made on the life of Milkha Singh and Marie Kom. 2013 seems to be exciting for cinema and its fans.
