Famous private investigator Prodosh Mitra, alias Phelu Mittir, reached Aurangabad along with his cousin Tapesh and crime novel writer Lal Mohan Ganguly, who writes usually in a pen name "Jatayu" to track a theft of a head of a sculpture from the Raja-Rani temple of Bhubaneswar. Before that Phelu Mittir got the news of theft from newspaper. And their uncle Sidhu Jyatha informed that he had seen a head of a sculpture in an art dealer's office. A man came to know from the dealer whether the piece was genuine or fake. An American buyer named Saul Sylverstyne was with the man. The next morning from the television news he also came to know that a person named Saul Sylverstyne was dead amongst others in a plane crash near a village. The plane was going to Kathmandu. Phelu Mittir went with Tapesh and Lal Mohan at the spot of the incident with a hope to get the head of the sculpture, but after reaching there he came to know that before some time a man in a black car had taken it from the villagers. On the way back to Calcutta they found a black car and started to follow it. After some time they found there were actually two black cars. They reached a resort. After investigations they came to know that the two black car passengers were trying to go to Aurangabad. Phelu Mittir immediately decided to follow them to Aurangabad. He had a hunch that following them he would be able to catch a racket who deals and sells illegally valuable Indian Sculptures to foreign buyers. The story reaches its climax in the Ellora caves where after murder, gun fights and chase Phelu Mittir was able to catch the gang leader of such a racket and cover the lost head of the sculpture.
