Kali Bandopadhay was an actor of great repute in the world of Bengali movies. Kali Bandopadhay was born on 20th November, 1920 in Kolkata.His real name was Kaliprasad Bandopadhay. His parents Manindranath Bandopadhay and Bhavani Devi used to call him by the name Nona. In 1938, he passed his Matriculation from Satyabhama Institution .although he got admitted to Ripon College , but he couldn’t continue his studies. He used to work as an interpreter in Air Force, Wireless headquarter in Delhi, and in American army Hospital. In 1925, he got married and had a daughter.
One of his friends introduced him to the famous director Hironmoy Sen and he gave him his first break in the role of a villain in “Burmar Pathe”.His talent was instantly recognized. His outstanding role in the movie “Neel Akasher Niche” was specially screened at Delhi in presence of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who himself got emotional while watching it. His films like “ Ajantrik “, Paras Pathar”,”Tin Knya “ Kabuliwala(1957), Louhokopat (1958), Aleyar alo (1970), Gurudakshina (1987) are still remembered by all movie buffs for his exceptional acting skills. Apart from working in the silver screen, he had also worked in theatre and Yatras. He was associated with Bharatiya Gananatya Sangha. This great actor passed away on 5th July, 1993. The great Hero of Bengali screen Uttam Kumar reminisced that it was Kali Banerjee whom he thought his competitor rather than Soumitra Chatterjee.
