    Kalyan Ray was born in Kolkata and educated at Presidency College, Kolkata, Delhi University, and at the University of Rochester where he earned a doctorate in literature.

    He has taught at St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, Queens College of the City University of New York, and is currently a Professor of English in New Jersey. His poems and translations have appeared at the US and India; some have been anthologized. His novel Eastwords (published by Penguin India in 2004 was adopted by several universities and colleges in Asia and the US as a text in courses on Post-Colonial literature). He is working on his new novel No Country which is about the Irish and Indian diaspora. He has published several books of translations of contemporary Indian poetry into English, including City of Memories (Viking Penguin India) which has a Preface by Allen Ginsberg and Emperor Babur’s Prayers and Other Poems by Sankha Ghosh. In the last couple of years he has acted in two Indian feature films including Antaheen directed by Aniruddha Raychowdhury where he played the role of his real life partner, actor-director Aparna Sen’s estranged husband.

    Ray directs the India Program of the International Partnership for Service-Learning which is affiliated to Portland State University, USA. He has taught in Greece, Ecuador, Jamaica and the Philippines where he was a Visiting Professor of Comparative Theology. He has long been associated with Indian social- service organizations and had collaborated with Mother Teresa in India; Ray did the translations and voice-over for the first documentary on her work (directed by Ann Petrie). He has lived in India, Ireland, the Philippines, and currently divides his time between USA and India.
