“Kamal lata” may be tagged as the déjà vu of eternal love, friendship & humanity. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Srikanto (4th part) has come alive with Uttam Kumar romping in a stupendous performance for the character of the protagonist Srikanto. The film is about the love between a Hindu & Muslim friend & how the two men combat & thwart the sectarian, superstitious, corrupted & inhuman custodians of diverse faiths. The film also depicts the selfless, serene & everlasting love between Kamal Lata (Suchitra Sen) & Srikanto. The performances of Suchitra Sen, Nirmal Kumar(Gahar), Pahari Sanyal, Tarun Kumar, Chhaya Debi, & Jahar Roy have been better than the best. Songs are the crux of the narration & melodies sung by Hemanta Mukhopadhyay & Shyamal Mitra stamp class & quality of international standards. Presented by Charu Chitra, “Kamal Lata” released in the mid 1960’s. Rabin Chattopadhyay’s music travels through the grass roots of Bengali folk music & withheld the heart of the film. Harisadhan Dasgupta’s screenplay & direction ranks “Kamal Lata” as one of the all time divine love stories of present era. Worth a watch!
