My Rating

  • Romantic angle/triangle spoils political film

Kanamachhi rating: 0 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 15 Mar 2013)

There are times when a director delivers a standout film and he completely falters with his next film. Such is the case of Raj Chakrabarty whose last film ‘Bojhena Se Bojhena’ was a standout film as it was different and his latest film ‘Kanamachi’ is also different and could have been different, but the director completely falters at the beginning itself.
The film is a political film , but has a romantic side to it as well. Both the ruling and the opposition party are at loggerheads with each other and a reporter(Nayana) and a photographer(Abir) of ABP are constantly looking for news which can expose the politicians . There is also an activist, Abhi running an organisation called ‘Barna Parichay’ who is also against the politicians. Abir is in love with Nayana and vice versa while their colleague, Payel is is love with Abir. There is a bomb blast one day when Abhi is addressing a meeting and several people including Payel die in that blast. Abhi decides to contest the forthcoming elections with members of his party , wins it and even becomes C.M. It turns out that Abir and Abhi know each other from before and Abir also sees a suspect in the bomb blast sitting in Abhi’s office one day. What is the connection? Is there much more to the story than expected? Is Abhi completely different from what we think him to be?

What spoils the film is the romantic triangle and later the romance between Abir and Nayana. It wasn’t required if the intention was to make a good solid political film. It spoiled the complete mood of the film. Songs and romantic moments kept on appearing at crucial moments of the film which just wasn’t required. That is the biggest drawback of the film. It is not so easy to become a C.M by just contesting elections overnight,a party which is hardly a party or hardly has any number of people(at least the required number for a big political party). The actors or actresses playing journalists just don’t look like journalists as they are not quite appropriate choices. Just making Srabanti wear specs doesn’t make her a journalist or do journos always wear specs? She wears specs in the entire film, but keeps on appearing in songs without them dancing around in streets abroad! Other than character actors, the only person who impresses is debutante Sayani Ghosh (who has already appeared in a serial called ‘Care Kori Na’ on Star Jalsha) who plays Payel . She plays a crazy, carefree , wacky character who is in love with Abir and later dies in a bomb blast. She is impressive and easily the ‘find’ of the film and the best among the leads. Does a paper like ABP have to look for exciting cover stories to increase its' number of reader? You never know, maybe it does have stiff competitors breathing down it's neck!

The film is a remake of the Tamil film Ko(2011). Just like Bojhena Na Se Bojhena, Raj could have made a film which is different, but chose not to.
