    Kangana Ranaut was born on 20th March 1987 at Bhambla in Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. Her father is a businessman and mother is a school teacher. She has an elder sister Rangoli who survived an acid attack in 2006. Her brother Akshit is an year younger than her. Her grandfather was an IAS Officer. Kangana spent her childhood in Dehra Dun and studied in DAV's High School where she participated in many debates, elocutions, and was a basket-ball player. After completing her schooling, she attended Science College in Simla. She was enrolled in the Elite School of Modeling, and also tried some theater acting in Delhi and was a member of the Smita Theater Group under Arvind Gaur. She is also a trained Kathak dancer, and is learning to sing from Amitabh Chakraborty.

    Kangana moved to Mumbai in 2005 and was spotted at a coffee shop by Anurag Basu who signed her for his film Gangster(2006) produced by Mukesh Bhatt. The film was a critical, commercial and musical success which won her all the major awards for Best Female Debut.

    After the success of Gangster, Kangana worked again with Mukesh Bhatt in the Mohit Suri directed Woh Lamhe(2006). The film based on Mahesh Bhatt’s relationship with Parveen Babi, won Kangana rave reviews.

    Kangana opened 2007 with the box office disaster Shakalaka Boom Boom(2007) with Bobby Deol, Upen Patel and Celina Jaitley. But this failure was followed up with another film with the director of her debut film Anurag Basu, Life In A… Metro (2007) which was a big hit.

    Kangana has finished shooting for a Tamil film Dhaam Dhoom(2008) and is currently shooting for Roshan(Under production) directed by Samir Karnik and starring Bobby Deol along with Fashion(Under production) directed by Madhur Bhandarkar.

    In 2007, Kangana won all the awards for Most Promising Female Newcomer including STAR Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards, Zee Cine Awards, IIFA Awards and Stardust Awards.Kangana was offered a role in Rakesh Roshan’s production Krazzy 4 which she refused.
