Karisma Kapoor (nickname Lolo named after Hollywood actress Gina Lollobrigida) was born on 25th June, 1974 in Mumbai in renowned Kapoor family. Her parents Randhir Kapoor and Babita both were actors. She is the granddaughter of legendary actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor and great grand daughter of Prithviraj Kapoor. She is sister of popular actress Kareena Kapoor and niece of actor directors Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor. Karisma went to school at Cathedral and John Connon School until grade six.

Karisma was initially supposed to make her debut with Bobby Deol in Barsaat (2000). But she quit the film after the movie was delayed. She finally made her debut in D Rama Naidu’s Prem Qaidi (1991) with Harish. The movie went on to become a box-office success.

Karisma had a spate of flops after her debut film but saw some success in Jigar (1992) and Anari (1993). In 1992-93, Karisma worked with Ajay Devgan in 4 films, Jigar, Shaktimaan (1993), Sangram (1993) and Dhanwan (1993).

It was Karisma’s pairing with Govinda which made her the talk of the town first with the controversy over the vulgarity of films and then with the stupendous success of the pair at box-office. Notable films of the pair were Muqabla (1993), Khuddaar (1994), Dulaara (1994), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No 1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Hero No 1(1997) and Haseena Maan Jayegi (1999). The year 1996 was the turning point in her career and her performance in Raja Hindustani (1996) and Jeet (1996) made her a strong contender to the top heroine slot in Bolywood. Karisma’s pairing with Salman Khan also became extremely popular with films like Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Judwaa (1997), Biwi No 1 (1999), Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000) and Chal Mere Bhai (2000). In 1997, Karisma won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dil To Pagal Hai(1997). Post 1999, Karisma managed a rare balance in critically acllaimed films and commercial potboilers. On one hand she earned rave reviews for Fiza (2000) and Zubeidaa (2001) while on other she had smashing hits like Hum Saath Saath Hai (1999), Biwi No 1 (1999), Haseena Maan Jayegi (1999), Janwar (1999), Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000), Ek Rishta : The Bond of Love (2001). Karisma paired with her then fiancee Abhishek Bachchan in Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (2002) but their engagement later broke off. In 2003, she acted as the lead in the TV show Karishma : A Miracle of Destiny on Sahara. The show was a lavish production but was a huge failure.

On 29th September, 2003, Karisma married industrialist Sanjay Kapur at her grandfather’s home R K Cottage. She has a daughter names Samaira who was born on 11th March, 2005. After her daughter’s birth, her relation with her husband has strained but they have now patched up and are together. Karisma quit movies after her marriage in 2003 and currently is contemplating a comeback in movies.

Karisma has won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress in Dil To Pagal Hai(1997). She also won the Filmfare Award for the same. She has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1997 for Raja Hindustani, in 2001 for Fiza and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for Zubeidaa in 2002.

Karisma has been the brand ambassador for brands like Khaitan fans, Tanishq Jewellery, Dabur Hair Oil.
